A friend and I keep debating about Byrne's Superman run and what issues should be included. He says the Annual should count because even though it was an Elseworlds story, it came out during the run. I say that 4th World #20 counts because even though it was published much later, it was set between MoS #5 and #6, and the cover itself is a clear homage to the MoS miniseries covers. It's basically a bonus MoS issue.
Thoughts? I'd love to hear from John directly, if he's willing to share!

The Annual didn’t come out during JB’s Super Run. It’s a 1994 annual. It’s a
great story and an idea he’d had for a good while, but not during his run.

Sure, I get that both were written later, but it's pretty clear 4W #20 was part of his run (at least, in my opinion). Was hoping Byrne himself would weigh in.

said. And it didn’t. It was released 8 years after MOS. And it was based on
an idea he had since the late 70s/early 80s. In no way could it have been
written as part of the MOS run.
Yes, JKFW 20 fits nicely within the overall miniseries, but I’m not sure what
you’re trying to say. No, it wasn’t part of the original run, it came 12 years
later after all, but it does fit within it.

I'll clarify:
I believe that regardless of when it was published, that 4W#20 should be considered to be part of the Superman run, because it was written to be directly in between MoS #5 and #6. It is essentially a "bonus" MoS issue that, while written much later, I would very much include in any issue-by-issue reading order list of his Superman tenure.
My friend disagrees on this, and additionally, believes that the Elseworlds Annual is what should be included in a "Byrne's Superman Reading Order" list, because he (clearly incorrectly) believed that it was published during the time of the run.
I am trying to find support/clarification (either via forum members and/or Byrne himself) on which of these two issues (or both) should be considered as part of a "complete" Byrne Superman run.

I would say a ‘run’ is what was published @ the time - so no.
A chronological reading order is a different thing, & would then include
Fourth World 20 (for me)
Elseworlds stands apart & I would read @ the end (for example)

Okay, that's fair, and I see the distinction you're making between "run" and "reading order".
Based on that, it sounds like you're saying you WOULD include 4W#20 as part of a reading order, and the Annual would be separate, similar to "Generations". (Which has been my stance as well)
I wonder if Byrne feels the same. Is there a way to tag him in this post? Or if I email the address on the contact page, do you think he'd respond?

Hey Josh. This forum is the best way to reach John Byrne. A direct email is not a good idea.
Long-time posters here know that he prefers to be addressed as "John" or "JB" rather than "Byrne" or any kind of nickname.
When John doesn't post in a thread, it generally means he doesn't really have anything to add.

I have both issues bound in with my volume. That volume includes all six issues of the man of steel and all 12 issues of the “world of.”
I think both you and your friend are right.
