Greetings Mr. Byrne,
I have just completed my first reading of your Galactus vs. Darkseid
graphic novel (The Hunger). I am curious as to how such a project came
into existence. Did you approach the big 2 for permission to do the
story, or was it a two-way street kind of arrangement? The 'special
thanks' to Marc Galinus McFinn suggests it was really your project.
Also, do you consider this story as a part of the official Galactus 'canon'?
In other words, looking back on this story, do you believe that this is how
a meeting between Darkseid and Galactus would actually play out, or is
this graphic novel merely an opportunity for you to work with these
characters without disrupting their respective universes?
You covered a lot of ground in this story, having provided the origins for
all significant players enabling readers to gain a bit of insight into the
relevant back-stories. However, I am somehow left with the feeling that
Darkseid--on any other day--wouldn't really stand much of a chance
against Galactus.
Any thoughts to share on this project?

I was at a Con -- don't recall which one -- and the aforementioned fan approached and said he had an idea for a DC/Marvel crossover; "Galactus tries to eat Apokolips." I was sitting next to George Perez at the time, and we looked at each other with kind of "Why didn't we think of that?" expressions on our faces.Flying home, the more I thought about it, the more I realized what a great idea it was, especially if I could convince the Powers that Were that it should be only Darkseid and Galactus, and not FF vs New Gods or any other such expanded version. I pitched the idea to DC, who immediately liked it, and set wheels in motion. Then I embarked upon the difficult task of finding the fan so I could give him proper credit. That was a fun book to work on. Only thing I don't like about it, looking back, is the inks. I was experimenting with a different pen, and the published pages did not look as good as the originals.

The inks looked great to me. I can't find any fault with the book (except maybe for the fact that I find the Black Racer silly)

Own it. Love it. I do think the Black Racer is silly too. But not to the extent it ruins anything.
Loved the ending on that book. Just note perfect.

I never could get into the JK4W stuff, but this book stood out for me thanks to JB's new use of art in it - you'll notice that every page is a splash page, with panels laid on top of the bigger image.
Pretty good stuff!
