My birthday was last Wednesday. I decided I wanted something different and I read a good review of some Modesty Balise strips so I decided to order a collection of strips and the first novel.
I have not read the novel yet but I really enjoyed the strips. It was in the collection called the black pearl.
After reading these I felt sad that they really do not have adventure strips anymore. Well at least they are not creating any new ones and a bunch of old ones have died off.
It also amazed me that they allowed nudity in comic strips in Europe. The collection I had did not have any but other Modesty Blaise strips did. My mother would not have let me read the newspaper when I was a kid if that had been the case in the US.
1. So what do you think of Modesty? 2. What do you think of Daily comic strips that are not a gag a day?

Love Modesty. Have a Romero original on my wall and it is the dirtiest strip (no nudity) but she's just on the phone with a sleazy white trader and the dialog and character's positioning in the panel is so seXXXy.

Big fan of Modesty Blaise. It was 30 years ago this month that the first complete story I read, The Inca Trail, appeared in The Evening Standard (I'd come in at the end of the previous story, Those About To Die). For this reason Romero's version will always be "my" Modesty, but I also think that the late, great Jim Holdaway was an incredibly gifted artist. Peter O'Donnell's scripts are always fun and he made Modesty and Willie Garvin into three-dimensional characters from the word go. Great supporting cast and lots of fun bad guys too.
I envy you all the great stories you've yet to read!

I have read 4 novels and I enjoyed them all.
MODESTY BLAISE
SABRE-TOOTH
THE XANADU TALISMAN
COBRA TRAP
I was fortunate that the library had those novels. I
always was 'familar" to the character but that was
from either a TV movie ior theatrical release. In no
way is it the same (to me) as the novels or strip.
After I read the novels I was able to pick up 3
collected volumes of the strip published by
Manuscript Press.
Funny thing about Modesty's origin, it reminded me
of Storm's origin from the X-Men.
I just wish there was more Mom and Pop style
bookstores that sells used books so that I could
have a library of the novels..and the strips.
Very good reading/characters and development. It
was a surprise to have read what Peter O'Donnell
eventually did with the characters.

My introduction to Modesty were the four novels Eric just listed, also fortunately in my local library's inventory, and i've been a fan of the character ever since, i have a bunch of Ken Price small sized collections, as well as some of the Comics Review magazine sized collections, love it all -- never picked up the DC comic adaption tho', something just seemed to warn me off -- can anyone recommend or confirm my hunch on that one?

regarding Adventure strips, i love 'em -- and i thought Mandrake and Phantom were still done, and of course Spider-Man?

http://www.coolfrenchcomics.com
this is the correct link.
It is quite OK and accurate. And it is in English, which can help our American and English members to have a better understanding of the French comics and its differences with the America comics books.

I believe Chris Claremont is a Modesty Blaise fan.
The wandering orphan element of Modesty's origin was inspired by a real-life encounter Peter O'Donnell had while in the army.

Hey guys -
Thanks for sharing those links and all the other info.
I realized I did not comment on Michael's question
about non-gag strips. I like them a lot. Actually I like
the diversity in themes of the strips such as a Annie,
Dick Tracy etc. They are all welcome along with the
Doonsberry's and one I wish would come back, The
Farside.
I wasn' t aware that DC published a Modesty series.
Nor did I know that Chris Claremont was a Modesty
fan.
It would be great if there could be some movie
adaption..handled correctly but mybe it is best that it
doesn't happen. I guess we can all just mentally
cast the movie the way we want in our minds eye.
(Althouh I would love to see something animated!)
I just tried doing a search on barnesandnoble.com
It "seems" that they have a selection of novels...but
call your local store and ask them first, Sometimes
the site post things that are not necessarily
available.

I love the newspaper strips as well as all of the novels, and Romero's art is gorgeous.

We had a strip called Jane in the Daily Mirror in the second world war,it featured semi nudity and lots of lingerie! As a kid i recall reading Garth in the same paper,he was a muscled adventurer often having it off with naked buxom alien babes(humanoid ones!) that was probably my first experience of the naked female form.I guess it was cheeky not pornographic.
