Boring's instantly recognizable barrel-chested Superman is a big favorite of mine. He definitely defined the Man of Steel for many years.

Boring was gone from Superman comics by the time I started reading, but his work lived on in the 100-page Super Spectaculars and especially in Superman from the 30s to the 70s, which I read and reread over and over.  When I picture Superman both the Boring and Swan versions are about equal in my head.  Boring had an idiosyncratic style that worked well with the weird psychology of some of the Superman stories of the day.

It's sad the way he was shunted aside at age 62, after years of loyal service.  After doing a few jobs for Marvel he left comics and wound up taking work as a security guard in a bank.   When DC brought him back in the mid 80's to do a few Superman jobs (including the above-mentioned origin retelling with Roy Thomas) I was shocked to find out he was still alive.  I wondered why he wasn't getting more work, since he hadn't lost a step artistically despite being in his late 70's.

For me outside of Joe Shuster himself, the Boring and Swan eras continue to influence artist interpretations of Superman. The Ordway and Bogdanove Superman draw from Mr. Boring. Sadly, I never had the chance to meet Mr. Boring. But I was lucky enough to win a Wayne Boring Superman sketch 2 years ago, off of ebay. It along with a Swan Superman piece I own are 2 very big highlights in my collection.

I always enjoyed Wayne's art on the Superman stories I read in the Australian black & white reprint comics I bought in the 70s & 80s. Like always, seeing it in B&W was a treat I suppose our US cousins missed out on.

I remember the pleasant surprise I got when I cracked open my new copy of Thor #280 and found a Thor vs Hyperion battle pencilled by Mr Boring. It was the closest you could've got to a Thor / Superman matchup in those days.
