…yet could manage to notice that they left not one, but it looks like FIVE
BWS

••

Reminded of a story Terry Austin tells. He was asked to help out inking
backgrounds on an issue of COBRA for DC. The credited inker told Terry
that he would not be getting a credit, so Terry, always the kidder, said
"That's okay! I'll just sign this cloud!" Which he did. This was Terry
poking a bit of fun at himself, in fact. When he inked backgrounds for
Dick Giordano on SUPERMAN vs THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Terry also
got no credit, so peppered his name thru the job on various signage on
buildings. He fully expected his little additions to be whited out in
editorial, but they were not -- and neither was his signature on that
cloud in COBRA!

That's some pretty sloppy coloring/editing. Never mind everything else that
is wrong with it.

And I remember seeing Terry's name in Superman vs Spider-Man! I had just
seen some of Terry's work (on a Green Arrow story? an Iron Fist story? one of
those, I believe with Mike Nasser), and then caught his name on a billboard
in one of the double-page spreads. Nice way of getting his name on the
work.

I can't help wondering what all those light sources are supposed to be. Most of them look way too close, and if they are supposed to be closer stars (some obviously on this side of the planet's moons (erhm), or maybe it's some kids on a plane with a flashlight) it seems as if the less distinct stars would no longer be visible because of the presence of all that light. Just as you don't see as many stars in the sky when watching from a lit city as a dark countryside. Seems as if the colourist would do VERY well to actually go out and watch a nightsky once in a while. Even without the fuckups with the moons and the BWS, I find this image on the bland and crappy side... to say the least.

I doubt those stars were digitally painted. More likely the colorist Googled 'Stars' and pasted the pic into the the page.

Should have known "Graphics Master" would have that obscure image on
hand at a moments notice. . .

Unfortunately, it inspired something close to an epidemic in some of the lesser lights. On a Charlton job I did not ink myself, the guy I got to ink it used a background man. The background man -- let's call him "Joe Smith" -- plastered his name all over the place. In one panel, there was a sign in the background that, in my pencils, read "Officer's Club - Commissioned Officers Only". This became "Officer's Club - Joe Smiths Only".

Of course, that was the one the editor didn't catch!

Sure hope that's a PUBLIC DOMAIN photograph!!!

Given how much can be done with Photoshop, and so easily, I wonder why
anyone would go to the effort to create something that just overwhelms the
art?
