I'm really digging Adam Corolla's IN 50 YEARS WE'LL ALL BE CHICKS. Just great so far.

I bailed out on, gulp, an Andrew Vachss novel THE WEIGHT. That man is seriously heavyweight and he's written some of the best short stories and at least one novel (SHELLA) that is in my top ten, but THE WEIGHT is weighed down with a protagonist who spends far too much time without a reason to do anything. Meanwhile, there's a lot of portention that doesn't seem to pay off, and too much focus on characters I could give a sh*t about. In a rare occurance, I just finally gave up, flipped to the end, saw the book didn't really do anything, and quit on it. In the old days, I'd have read it all just because I'd started it and, like my plate, always finished. Not here. Doesn't make me think less of Vachss, but it was a disappointment. Some good inner-prison-life info in there, though. So not a total loss.

I'm also reading James Ellroy's THE HILLIKER CURSE, which is probably more hardboiled than his most hardboiled fiction. It's a well-done self-examination in Ellroy's staccato kick-nuts style. It's a fascinating view of a writer in full-on Henry Miller mode, so check it.

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, considered the first English language detective novel.  I read about the book in another novel, Drood by Dan Simmons, which piqued my interest.  I'm also testing my new Blackberry tablet as an eBook reader and I'm starting with a couple free books before I decide to purchase any.

A History Of Scotland by Neil Oliver

Brilliant book, I was a little hesitant over the first few pages as it begins in a way I found both pretentious and ponderous but it soon left that behind and grabbed me and wouldn't let go. This book was partnered with a documentary on the BBC so I'm hoping to get that at some point.

"Evel"  by Leigh Montville a wonderful book on one of my childhood heroes. A flawed, self-destructive man but he sure gave the fans what they wanted.

"100 Voices, An Oral History of Ayn Rand" by Scott McConnell

"The Feathered Octopus" by Kenneth Robeson

Recently started some new books I picked up or ordered at Barnes & Noble:

"Karza: An American Dream" by Brian Saint-Yvez.  Political thriller with a right-winger's POV.  A quick read at 330+ poages.

"Poison King" by Adrienne Mayor.  Historical biography of Mithridates, the Hellenistic king who tried to fend off Roman expansion into Anatolia (the Asian portion of modern Turkey) in the 1st Century BCE.  Quite an interesting subject, given what ultimately happened.

"A History of the English-Speaking People" by Winston Churchill.  The British leader's multi-volume historiographic essay.  I'm certain to enjoy reading this, especially given that I've more or less exhausted all available classical reading.

I am working my way through A.A. Attanasio's series retelling of the Arthurian legends. I love this authors writing, very lyrical.

 The Dragon and the Unicorn

 The Eagle and the Sword

The Wolf and the Crown(the one I am currently on)

Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds. Only about 100 pgs in, but really enjoying it so far. This is the first novel I've read by the author. Has anyone read others?

Darwyn Cooke's recent work has turned me onto the Parker novels by Richard Stark and my father just loaned me three of them. I'm currently reading THE SCORE and enjoying it quite a bit.
