The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer.
Had it for years, got through a small part many years ago and then I think just lost momentum under the sheer number of characters introduced in quick succession. Now 300 pages to the good, and am enjoying the way he takes his time to get round to giving you any kind of background for each character. They start as names with very loose descriptions and then every so often the 'time machine' kicks in and you finally get to learn, in turn, who they were before the war and how they came to be the way they are.

Just finished THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET by Brian Selznick. Fantastic novel. DC and Marvel could learn a thing or two from Brian Selznick about "All-Ages." Up next, THE SHADOW OF THE WIND by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

In honor of Bilbo and Frodo's September 22 birthday, I am re-reading The Lord of the Rings. I am halfway through The Fellowship, this being the first time I've read these since the movies, I had forgotten how different the two were.

Just finished GHOST STORY, a Dresden novel by Jim Butcher. He says the last book did not end with a cliffhanger; after reading the latest one, I'm not sure his definition of "cliffhanger" is the same as mine.
THE ILLEARTH WAR by Stephen R. Donaldson was supposed to be next but the first book in the series, LORD FOUL'S BANE, was not what I had hoped it would be. So I'm starting FOUNDATION again. Early Asimov rules.
