Since you owned the page from issue #98 originally do you know anything more about what the original panel looked like?

••

Most likely, the panel on the page is the original. It was probably raised or lowered to make room for copy.

When it was necessary to do that, it was not uncommon in those days to just cut up the original art and paste/tape it back together.

Eric: Yeah I know. I got that because I was a big fan of Timber Wolf, but it certainly seemed to miss the mark. There are several questions I think a creator should ask themselves when thinking about completely re-designing a character, one of which "was the costume designed by Cockrum/Kane/Ditko?" If the answer is "yes" then 75% of the time, the answer to a complete overhaul to the look should be "no".

As I have said many a time before, one of the things that used to really blow me away when it came to Dave's costume designs was that he would so often recycle the same elements -- long gloves, thigh-high boots, sash -- and still come up with TOTALLY DIFFERENT COSTUMES!

I wonder if Jack Kirby ever took notice of Wolverine.

Might´ve been fun to see him draw the short, quick-tempered, cigar-chomping mutant!

One of the great "what ifs" in comics, imo. That image Larry linked to is a good effort but falls short, somewhat.

I think if one wanted to simulate a Kirby Wolverine, they might use an existing image for inspiration. Something like this, perhaps.

Or maybe this.

I know this isn't what is being discussed...but that Kirby Black Panther page is beyond belief. It looks like a man constructed from bricks hurled with the weight that that would entail.

All those "Could, should'a, would'a beens" about Jack Kirby putting his pencils to the merry mutants the Len, Chris, Dave, Sam, John, and Terry brought to the pages is fun for a spell, but we all know that the man isn't around to fulfill that wish any more.  Neat to see people try to emulate him doing it, but nothing compares with the original.

I did note the "yesterday and today" versions of John's "unmasked Wolverine" sketch, and see where he did indeed improve upon himself.  The construction of the face seems more life-like than what I used to think when I was a kid (that was always the thing about Byrne art for me, even in that day).
