  • Kirby (original square head Hulk)
  • Sal Buscema (1970s-1980s grandmaster Hulk)
  • Trimpe (particularly Trimpe inking Trimpe, just gorgeous, but the Severin-inked stuff is fabulous as well)
  • JB (specifically the Kirby riff square head Hulk)
  • Walt Simonson (RAMPAGING HULK magazine, inked by Alcala, amazing)

Good call on Walter Simonson's b&w magazine version Chad!

No particular order:

Herb Trimpe
Marie Severin
Gary Frank
Ed McGuiness
John Byrne

...and an honorable mention goes to Walt Simonson for The Rampaging
Hulk.

Robert B., that Simonson Hulk is Top Five all-time images of the character, imo. I recall seeing that splash in a Bullpen Bulletins, devoid of captions or titles, as a seven or eight yr old; remember being actually a little scared by it. So Simonson probably did exactly what he set out to do, in creating a more "realistic" Hulk.

Many, many artists today should take notes, when shooting for "realism" in comics. A bunch of steroidal veins does not a Hulk make.

1. Sal Buscema -- hands down, my definitive Hulk artist.
2. Gary Frank -- loved his "Merged Hulk"...
3. Dale Keown -- ranked lower `cause he didn't stick around for IH #400...
4. Todd McFarlane -- his Gray Hulk...wow!  Monstrous....
5. Herb Trimpe -- he had two spectacular stints inking his own work that I absolutely love (@#117-123 & #182-186, great stuff!)

Honorable mentions:
Ed McGuinness (spoiled because of the Red Hulk garbage).
Walt Simonson & Alfredo Alcala from the Rampaging Hulk mag.
John Byrne himself...great rendition, too short of a run.
