My first Joker was Jim Aparo, I think.

Paul Greer: "First: I believe it was Neal Adams. I recall my first Batman comic being a digest that reprinted stories from various eras. I am postive it reprinted the Five-Way Revenge story."
**************
Paul- while not my first Batman story, that was the digest that introduced me to that particular story. I'm hoping I have it somewhere so I can give it to my son someday.
One of all my all-time favorite panels is the Joker in front of the shark in the water tank:
That digest was SO cool! If we're referring to the same thing, the digest came out in 1979 and collected the "best" Batman stories from Batman's 40 years of existence.
The other stories in the digest were amazing, including and especially, "The First Batman" with Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father, as the first Batman.
Fun memories!

I mentioned before that I thought Marshall Rogers' Joker looked a lot like Cesar Romero, but scarier. But I can also see how Hollywood casting people could look at this:
...and see the face of Jack Nicholson.
I wonder, was Marshall Rogers doing any kind of deliberate casting for the character?

My first would be Aparo. I was going to say my favorite was Adams, but the Marshall Rogers pics reminded me how much I liked his rendition.

At the time I first started reading Batman, the Joker (as well as all the other major Batman villains) was benched while editor Julius Schwartz attempted to disassociate the comic from the costumed-villain-driven TV series. Amazingly, from 1969 to 1971 there was 26-month period in which not one of Batman's major villains appeared in either Batman or Detective. I bet that's never happened anytime before or since. And the Joker was out of action even longer, last appearing in Detective 388 (June 1969) and then sitting out a full four years until "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge."
So my first exposure to the character was via Batman from the 30s to the 70s. And since I likely read the book in order, the first Joker story I read was THE first Joker story drawn by Jerry Robinson. His Joker is probably still my favorite.

I would be remiss in not also mentioning the great Joker stories in GENERATIONS 1 and GENERATIONS 2.
The first one made me *hate* the Joker, which is what a good depiction of a villain should.

Jason, you beat me to it! Jerry Robinson's Joker is probably my favorite, as well.
This cover is probably my favorite drawing of the Joker ever.
Although, I also have a great appreciation for Bolland's Joker.

This is the first Joker story I remember reading (and the first Joker story!) that sticks in my mind from the Batman # 1 Treasury Edition reprint. Bob Kane I assume. Neal Adams and Marshall Rogers are the next two I think of with Joker, followed by Brian Bolland.

Dick Sprang. First joker I encountered in the 50's could have been Sprang, could have been Shelley Moldoff, aka "Bob Kane."

"Bob Kane" was a studio system — which isn't automatically a bad thing, but the man himself later spent many years denying this fact and the contributions of his many collaborators.
Who really drew that page? Was it Jerry Robinson? Maybe even Bob Kane?
