I prefer the bionic, internal claws to Len Wein's original concept of claws housed in gloves.

If someone else takes those gloves, they get the claws. Doesn't make Wolverine as special as if they are fitted inside him.

I think the Claremont/Byrne pairing did some amazing work expanding on Wolverine just enough to make him fascinating. The info was drip-fed enough to tantalize but they held off from revealing so much as to erase the mystique.

Having the claws fitted in Wolverine by some unknown, barbaric operation gave many wonderful character moments. A potentially psychotic loose-cannon, but somehow deserving of some sympathy.

What Peter said!

Not all questions should be answered. Not every mystery must be
solved.

Ah, Wallace, how I wish you could impress that simple thought upon the idiots who complained every time I left a question unanswered. Clearly, that was me being LAZY!!

Truth!

Wolverine was so much more interesting when his past was only hinted at.

Yeah, the bone claws thing kind of turned me off, too. It's not the same as a lizard that can cause the tips of its ribs to poke out and stab predators, but the whole idea that Wolverine's claws were always there really detracted from the character. I forgot that Shooter was in there micromanaging the whole deal in the beginning.

I like the element of Wolverine ripping oven his hands every
time he pops his claws, and not because JB came up with
that (I didn't even know that until this very thread - you learn
something new every day!) It adds a level of badassery to
Logan.
The only thing is, it's been handled inconsistently over the
years. The first time it was officially revealed was years after
JB left, during the Genosha storyline. Wolverine and Rogue
lost their powers, and Wolverine started bleeding profusely
when he popped his claws. However, I'm sure there were
other times where his healing factor was neutralized and
that didn't happen.

I've always been under the impression that the bone claws happened after Claremont was gone from Marvel. Which isn't to say the idea wasn't kicked around but both Shooter and Claremont couldn't have been the ones that green lite it.

As for not every question should be answered, I'd agree to a point, There are some things that build up the mystery too much (like Lost) and then not really answer the questions they hyped. Personally, I normally prefer to not have some things answered, such as why Jason keeps coming back to kill campers. He just does to me.

Ideas float around for years and years. Sometimes an artist or writer hears about something and decides to do it, not considering the reasons it might not have been done before!
