I prefer the bionic, internal claws to Len Wein's original concept of claws housed in gloves.
If someone else takes those gloves, they get the claws. Doesn't make Wolverine as special as if they are fitted inside him.
I think the Claremont/Byrne pairing did some amazing work expanding on Wolverine just enough to make him fascinating. The info was drip-fed enough to tantalize but they held off from revealing so much as to erase the mystique.
Having the claws fitted in Wolverine by some unknown, barbaric operation gave many wonderful character moments. A potentially psychotic loose-cannon, but somehow deserving of some sympathy.
