That was a great run with HIDDEN YEARS JB. Sucked that it only lasted as long as it did, wish it would have gone much longer.

HIDDEN YEARS was easily the best X-book since, well, the late '70s UNCANNY X-MEN.

JB's Huk run remains as some of the very best comic book fare ever!!!  I was crushed by his departure.

Looking back, I probably should have asked Terry to ink HIDDEN YEARS. It would not have given me the look I wanted, and I was happy with Tom's inks, but it would likely have been more "commercial."

JB, I really enjoyed your pairing with Tom Palmer. In fact, after the end of
XMHY, I was hoping that the two of you would work together again.

I remember Hidden Years being announced and all the kids I knew (yeah we were in our late 20's and early 30's) that were interested in the book spoke about how they hoped Terry would be inking it. There were lots of people hoping Hidden Years would duplicate the lightning in a bottle from their youth. Terry on inking duties would have been exactly what me and my comic book friends were looking for from XMHY.

If I was given a choice of inker on XMHY before it was begun I would have picked Austin.
But the final product is fabulous with Palmer and would not want it any other way. Perfect choice.
I reread the first nine issues recently, I just cannot get my fill.
Man oh man I wish that series had gone on longer.

Well, as far as I know, if JB isn't inking himself, the general comic
book collecting public will always want Terry on inks. You tell the
public it's Byrne and Austin together and you'll get some attention.

JB and Terry are the John Lennon and Paul McCartney of comic book
art.

The last few times I've seen Austin inking JB (most recently in DOOM
PATROL, I believe.), it looked great but it wasn't the same look that was
so beloved back in the day. And how could it be? Both John and Terry
have grown as artists by leaps and bounds over the years (I had a
similar feeling when Austin "reunited" with Marshall Rogers on a
Batman miniseries a few years back. Beautiful stuff, but no longer the
same look the two achieved in their DETECTIVE run.).

Good memory Eric. I had forgotten that Austin inked an issue of
DOOM PATROL. I was trying to think about the last time I saw them
together and the best I could come up with was AMAZON. I thought,
"Surely it hasn't been THAT long?!"
