Speaking of Superman surviving a nuclear blast, one of my
favorite comics had the pre-crisis Superman and Supergirl fighting
against the War World.
A big missle starts flying toward Superman and he tells Supergirl to
back off while he see how powerful it is. The thing hits him and
knocks him for a loop. He tells Supergirl "I know one thing we
would not be able to survive two of those". They look up and two
of them are about to hit them.

I would be very interested in seeing how JB handled Zatanna as a regular character. I've always seen her as a difficult character to write, since she's never seemed to have any limitations on her powers. In the 30-odd years I've known the character, I can't remember her ever attempting a spell that turned out to be beyond her abilitites.
So how do you find a challenge for a character that seems to be functionally omnipotent?

John, would the guy getting hit with the sledge hammer die pretty easily then? And, Hulk's taken multiple shots with the hammer just fine -- is he more invulnerable than Superman, in your opinion? Would Superman be able to shrug off Mjolnr hits like Hulk has? Or would he be made all mushy like a human sledge victim would likely be?*** Depends on how many times -- and where -- he got hit.

No really "solutions" there, John. If Thor has
been possessed by Loki, for instance, the "why" is answered, and even if
this places Superman "in the right" he is still at a disadvantage, since he
would hesitate to outright kill Thor even if it was necessary to stop an evil
god. Thor might have slightly fewer compunctions, if the situation was
reversed, but there he would be facing a Superman who had no qualms at
all about doing him in. Who the publisher is makes no difference. If this
was an "official crossover", as opposed to something like the Thor
appearance I did in FOURTH WORLD, then the end result would have to be
a tie. |

Good points, JB, but you've got to admit that, fan- (or pro-)speculation of
power levels aside, it ultimately comes down to how it serves the story in
the book being told. It's like the years when I was working at a comics
shop and kids would ask me who I thought would win in a fight between
Hulk and Iron Man. I'd always say, "Well, if it's in 'Invincible Iron Man,'
Hulk beats Iron Man in the first half of the story, but Iron Man narrowly
survives and figures out a way to beat Hulk in the second half. If it's in
'Incredible Hulk,' Iron Man will have come up with some experimental
device to stop the Hulk's rampages, which will work initially, but the Hulk
will ultimately win by knocking Iron Man silly and then going about his
business in the end. I suggest you buy both, because odds are there'll be
a great cliffhanger in one of them that will throw in a complete surprise,
like an unexpected villain or something, and then you can find out for
yourselves."
My boss loved those answers and would go back to sorting his Golden
Age Supermans, but the kids usually just groaned and grew up reading
Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis.

JB's Superman seems (to me) to be one of the
few characters who *should* have the best chance of surviving a nuclear

dead. Nowadays, I guess he'd shrug off anything less than multi-megaton
H-bombs.
The Hulk might be the one other I can think of, offhand, because he
was *created* by a nuclear explosion and is powered by the radiation he
absorbed (and, per Peter David, continues to absorb).
Thor? Probably a blackened skeleton. Captain Marvel? Mmmm...
probably dead too. |

It's been many years since I've read the Dark Knight Returns, but wasn't
that a nuke that hit and nearly killed Superman towards the end? I rather
liked how Frank Miller showed the results of that.

John:
Thanks for the response. One lingering question (for now, that is -- I'm sure there'll be more) -- In your opinion, who is more invulnerable, your Superman or Hulk; also, who is more invulnerable: today's Superman or Hulk?
Thanks again, Chief.
