Georgia has been turning purplish in recent years, but it stands to reason that part of the reason Biden is doing well there is due in part to some never-Trump supporters.  Those people are going to be voting Republican in the special election.  And I think enthusiasm is going to be higher among Republicans to turn out, because they will be bombarded with commercials telling them that Biden is going to turn the US into a socialist paradise if the Democrats control the Senate.  I don't think there's much chance of either Democrat prevailing in the special election.

Democrats will only win the Georgia Senate seats if they articulate 3 r 4 big things most Georgians would vote for, eg. $15 minimum wage, legal weed, etc.   They cannot win with another vague campaign about a return to normalcy.

Joe Biden sounding more presidential in a few minutes there than Trump has at any point in the last four years.

You forget the not-so-secret weapon that the Dems have in Georgia: the turn-out-the-vote-machine that is Stacey Abrams.  She's responsible for registering tens of thousands of people who hadn't ever voted before - and once again proved that the only thing standing between American Democracy and a failed state are the African-American community(ies) and black women in particular.

She's basically a real-world version of Leslie Knope - she's positively evangelical on civic responsibility and the power and importance of voting. Abrams could flip BOTH runoff seats, and McConnell knows it.

Edited to add: and in stark contrast, even MORE white women voted for Trump this time around than last time.

The Never-Trumpers likely voted Republican in this election as well (with the exception of Biden/Harris) so I’m not sure what the difference would be. What /might/ be different is the Trump cultists who voted a straight party ticket in this election staying home because their Beloved Leader is not on the ballot. Of course winning would require all the Democrats voters who showed up for the Presidential election to show up to the Special Election. Looking to Stacey Abrams to pull that off.

If Stacey Abrams is as great as you guys say, it's too bad she didn't run for one of those seats herself.

Stacey Adams did her political turn already, plus she's busy running Fair Fight Action. They fight voter suppression.

For almost three days they've been saying Biden is nearing victory. It's like trying to approach the speed of light, but never getting there.

Chuck Yeager's first test flight in the X-1 was on August 29, 1947. He finally broke the sound barrier on October 14th a short 46 days later. Just be patient. Everyone wants to get the count right in anticipating doing it all over again. Several states will require, rightly so, a recount because the margin of victory will be so slim.

What is frightening is the lengths the current President will go to in order to undermine democracy itself. Eventually, a winner will be declared and verified. The behaviour of both candidates in the weeks between that verification date and January 20, 2021 will tell us if we missed out on a great President or dodged a bullet.

Officially, the election won't be "in the books" until it's certified in December.

Right now, Pennsylvania Republican officials are requesting an audit of the election process, something the did during the primaries. Thankfully, they're dismissing all claims of any voter fraud.  Biden has a lead of nearly 29,000 votes there with 99% counted.  Their state law does not call for an automatic recount, but it can be requested.  Trump campaign will need to pay in advance though.

In Georgia, their state law calls for an automatic recount since it's so close and since the difference is less than 1%.  Biden currently has a lead of just over 7,000 votes there with 99% counted.

In Nevada, Biden holds a nearly 23,000 vote lead with only 87% counted. Every time numbers released though, his lead increase.  Like PA, no law for auto recount.

I've learned a lot these past few days from Steve Cornacki...

Once we get past all the idiotic legal challenges (so far Trump is 0 for them all, including 3 to the SC about PA), Biden will be the winner.

EDIT:  Just as I was posting this, Pennsylvania was just called for Biden.  HE WON!!!

JB & Mods: i think it'd be a satsfying and fitting gesture to lock this thread. The greatest luxury of a Biden/Harris win is that very soon we can completely ignore private citizen Donald J. Trump.
