Nixon was a crook, and pure evil, but he was a dedicated and effective administrator.

What I'm not getting is, how would this phone call even help him in the end? Georgia's 16 electoral votes still doesn't get him over 270.

Vinny, I am thinking this is likely one of several calls he has been making in his effort to do everything BUT address COVID-19 - I bet he is calling Republicans in other states, and Georgia is the only one that leaked.
The Washington Post reported on this kind of erratic behavior before the holidays.

Vinny, I think it is all about instilling doubt at this point. If they could have called the Georgia election into question and caused them to accept the bag of crap from that phone call (holy shit that guy spits out numbers like a monkey on a calculator) then it would validate the same kind of attack on other elections in other states. He tried to leverage being Republican often with the Georgia State election officials to see if they could pull them into line like so many other representatives.
I look at what is happening less like throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, and more like a probing exercise to see what might work in the future. The US democracy needs to plug up several holes that were previously guarded with decorum, honor and fair play because we are seeing none of these things from the outgoing regime. And these things won't protect America from Nixon 3.0/Trump 2.0 in the future.

He was also in touch with reality. This phone call makes it apparent that Trump actually believes the various conspiracy theories that he's been fed and truly believes there was fraud that cost him the election. He is not a mastermind intentionally sowing false confusion and doubt for political ends... rather, he is someone who is mentally unstable to the point he can't discern between fact and fiction, and is unable to accept facts which contradict his desired worldview. That a person in such condition is president is frightening, as is the fact that a substantial amount of elected officials are willing to enable him because they believe it suits their political ends.

Let's not let Nixon completely off the hook. He was indeed a fucking nut, crazy enough to order his cabinet secretaries to identify and fire Jews in their departments.
The thing about Trump is, there haven't really been any surprises. While it's surprising that anyone would act the way he does, it's not particularly unexpected from him. And yet these assholes elected him president anyway.
It's like that line from 28 Days Later: "You know why this is a shit idea? Because it's so obviously a shit idea."

****** When Republicans finally lose power, Dems need to pass some SERIOUS legislation that will prevent future presidents from acting so disturbingly crass, arrogant & irresponsible.... among other things clearly evident in Trump's years in office. Of course, the PEOPLE must put the pressure on for these politicians to do so or nothing will change.

I honestly don't think so. This is just the Trump playbook. Bully, bluff, and threaten. Think that you're entitled to something just because you want it. He's used to getting what he wants, so he's throwing a chief executive-level temper tantrum in an attempt to get something that's been denied him.

Steve Schmidt is sounding the alarm on Twitter and I can't say I disagree with him. The die is cast for the Republican Party. It will be destroyed on January 6th in much the same way the Whig party was destroyed by the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. The act unraveled the Missouri compromise and allowed for the westward expansion of slavery. The party could not survive its factionalism. There could be no more accommodation, compromise and partnership between pro-slavery and anti-slavery Whigs. A new political party was born, the Republican Party. That party will divide into irreconcilable factions on January 6th. The6th will commence a political civil war inside the GOP. The autocratic side will roll over the pro-democracy remnant of the GOP like the Wehrmacht did the Belgian Army in 1940. The ‘22 GOP primary season will be a bloodletting. The6th will be a loyalty test. The purge will follow. Does anybody doubt the outcome of the @IvankaTrump vs. @marcorubio primary in Florida? Anyone willing to make a bet on @robportman? It turns out JFK was right. The problem of trying to ride the tiger is the likelihood of winding up inside the tiger. The poisonous Fruit from four years of collaboration and complicity with Trumps insanity, illiberalism and incompetence are ready for harvest. It will kill the GOP because it’s Pro-Democracy faction and Autocratic factions can no more exist together then could the Whig Party hold together the abolitionist with the Slave master. It won’t happen overnight, but the destination is clear. The Conservative party in America is dead. It may continue to bear the name“Republican” but it will be no such thing. Fascism has indeed come to America and as was once predicted it is wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. This movement must be defeated. It cannot be appeased, accommodated or negotiated with. It must be recognized for what it is and we must all recognize the new age of American politics it has wrought. It has reset the debate entirely. There are only two sides in American politics now. There is the American side and the Autocratic side. May God help us all if we falter, flag or fail in defense of American democracy.

@Eric You have hit it on the head with an Uru hammer.
The Republicans are a fascist party. Of that there is no doubt. Every 80 years or so, like clockwork, a new fascist movement rises in America, usually after a time of economic crisis. Its been about 80 years since WW2....and guess what’s happening now?
@Peter Nixon was not impeached...but he would have been if he stood his ground (like Trump) and defied the inevitable.
The GOP at the time were willing to take action against him (unlike today). And to his (small) credit he accepted the consequences (unlike today). So when I say in another time and place...I mean that period where even a crooked President and his party knew when the jig is up.
Nixon was ousted from DC. And Ford’s pardon kept him from the legal process.

Anyone paying close attention to the Georgia runoff today? It's probably the most important election to America since November. This will decide whether things get done the few years or if a petulant racist retains control of the Senate and refuses to do a damn thing.

D.A.P. - I can't agree with you 100% about the Republicans being fascist... not entirely. But they DO seem to struggle with being at least second among the major parties. I do not blame the party exactly, but I blame the strong characters driving the party. I could see the G.O.P. splitting in two very easily... which would, of course, leave the Dems in control for a good 20 years at least.
But there is far, far too much fascism in the Republican Party, too many party before country members, too many "get us a King to run things and take care of us" individuals, too many chafing to keep the rules that suit them, and BREAK - not amend, not change - the rules that don't.
It's REAL nasty out there right now, and President Murder empowered too many of the radical right for them to be shut down in just a couple months.
As for Georgia today? It's a BIG deal that we need just to free the Senate to open and fair debate; and to get one fat, turtlish ass off of all those bills. That's why Republicans get a vote; they shouldn't have control of what gets to the floor too.
