Knowing his supporters would be ready for anything he tried his luck and sparkled them to see how far they would go. So yes he sort of tried to trigger a coup and if / as it failed he can now say he didn't do anything. Not all coups start with epic sweeping stormings, some start with ridiculous decisions or stupid actions and grow bigger into effect. Some fail.

Conspiracy theory? This desire to not believe the very worst of Trump is one of the reasons he has gotten as far as he has. When the insurgents had t-shirts printed up that said “CIVIL WAR - JANUARY 6, 2020” you might wanna assume they know something you don’t!
Read this story about this well meaning ‘patriot’. I’m willing to bet he wasn’t alone....

Republicans pushing the “move on” and “heal” rhetoric are treating Trump’s coup exactly like a mass shooting.
Well, we’ve seen what’s happened when mass shootings are ignored.
Also was thinking... Al Franken resigned because of a photo of him years prior to office. Katie Hill resigned cause of a consensual affair & nude photos posted by her ex.
Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley & Trump incited a riot against America. Five people died.... NO resignations.
THAT needs to be fixed.

Maybe Marvel should publish a story where The Publisher clearly denounces and "punishes" these morons?
And speaking of punishment, I sincerely hope that charges more serious than trespassing and such are brought against these terrorists. They are traitors, insurrectionists, and planned destruction, to overtake our government, and even kidnapping and murder. A slap on the wrist is not enough.

Arrests are one thing.
Serving serious jail time is a whole different matter.
These folks were planning to cause harm and jail time is what everyone that stormed the Capitol deserves.

January 6th, 2021 in Washington D.C., and various state Governor's mansions grounds, one officer murdered.
George Zimmerman being released for murder of Trayvon Martin deemed legally "armed with a sidewalk" in the state of Florida, and Zimmerman advised to arm himself.
Sandy Hook elementary shooting, Pulse nightclub shooting, Columbine high school shooting, Las Vegas concert shooting, many others.
Rodney King beating by police in California, arrest and death of Sandra Bland in Texas, George Floyd suffocation in Minnesota, Native American shot and killed in Seattle for walking with a wood carving knife; just a few incidents that were caught on video.
versus not real outrages...
Half-truth junk Rush Limbaugh, medal Of freedom recipient, fulminates about endlessly on hundreds of radio stations and thousands of shows.
Entirely invented fictions Donald Trump spews to rally crowds who roar their approval.
Most of the paranoid fantasy scenarios the NRA leadership writes or warns of for about the last twenty or so years.
