I noted Bendis in a re-reading of that JBNM issue.
When I was reading comics in the mid-70's two letterhack names stood out:
cat yronwode - ( Of Eclipse Comics, CBG columns, Claypool Comics ...etc. ) I did not know the nickname "Cat" was short for "Catherine" at the time so I thought it was kinda neat. I also liked the all lower-case signature.
Commander Quotey and his Lost Marvel Madmen - Just an interesting name.

Lots of famous letterhacks out there -
Roy Thomas, Tony Isabella, Dave Cockrum, Len Wein, Paul Levitz, Marv Wolfman, Mike Barr etc, etc all appeared often on 60's Marvel & DC letter pages.
Wendy & Richard Pini (Elfquest) met thru the letters pages (FF I seem to recall).
Guy H. Lillian (our favorite Guy) & Irene Vartanoff (sp?) appeared in several letters pages a month. I believe they both later worked for DC & Marvel.

Dale Coe was a letter writer from England whose letters I always enjoyed. "Unlce Elvis" was also known as Elvis Orten, and he was from somewhere in my home state, Kentucky.
I had a string of letters published in Wonder Woman (2nd Series), but I was never a true letterhack.

I had letters printed in Concrete, X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, and Wonder Woman when JB was working on it!
It's neat when I read an old book and see, for instance, Kurt Busiek explaining why he's not going to buy X-Men anymore (Printed in JB's last issue!).
Letters pages also used to be my way of trying to find out what happened in the issues I missed.

I had some letters printed in Thing, Cerebus, and elsewhere. I used to get a real charge out of seeing my letter in print (I think I bought 2 copies of Thing #27).
The famous letterhack I thought of was Stephen Scott Beau Smith, who parlayed his letterhacking name recognition into writing gigs as Beau Smith.

I've had four letters printed, two in IRON MAN, one in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and my very first in an issue of MARVEL TALES. I can think of no greater joy at that young time in my life than seeing that Danny Fingeroth had printed my letter and responded to it.

FF during Jb's run, and ASM during the symbiote costume run for me.
Also one of the biggest thrills ever as a child. My name in a comic. My letter. So cool.

I had a couple of letters in the 1990s version of Comics Scene, as well as one in Doctor Who Magazine.
My favourite lettercol memory outside of TM Maple's missives is The Death Duel of the Crazed Mutant Letterhacks from Son of Ambush Bug #3 (if my memory serves me correctly). Just endless letters back and forth between Mark Haden Frazer and TE Pouncey. One of the letters mentioned velvet paintings of Elvis, so Uncle Elvis wrote in a few issues later categorically denying that he posed for the paintings in question.
I miss Ambush Bug.

Another big-time letterhack who eventually entered the industry was
Kevin Dooley - his name is in all kinds of DC books from the 70s.
Just read an issue of GL the other day with a letter from Todd
McFarlane, although my all-time favourite letter column sighting still
remains "Jimmy Shooter" from my copy of X-Men #17!
