My dictionary says "elf or fairy" for "sprite". Is there no equivalent in French?

I think it should be translated as "Lutin" which is a kind of "Fairy".

I learned this from a French reprint I saw in Canada. I immediately wanted to create a character called Serval, just to mess with the French translators!

Oh I would have loved that. There are few codename translation problems in X-Men.

"Diablo" for Nightcrawler was the worst as there was another Diablo...

But Marvel Girl being "Strange Girl" was weird too.

Vanisher became "le Fantôme" (The Ghost) and that became complicated because Banshee was also translated as "le Fantôme".

So Banshee later became "le Hurleur" (The Screamer) which dropped the irish fairy tale aspect of his name.

But I'm fond of those old french magazines you know.

Why would Banshee be translated at all? It’s not an English word!

JB, I seem to remember the term “mutate” used in some Marvel books
in the mid-to-late-1980s. Would that be equivalent to “non-mutant
variant”?

Mutate was a—fungible word. How it was used depended largely (and confusingly) on who was using it!

Ack! So many items discussed since my last visit!

Poor Kitty was changed almost immediately post JB, and seemed to age two years with every new book appearance. She came across as a woman in her 30's in the recent X-Men Gold series.

JB Avengers. I have mentioned this before, but the clear differences between George Perez and JB were my first realization that I could discern different artists other than say, Kirby. Of course that is also when I determined that JB and this Perez guy were pretty good at it.

Red Ghost....maybe he can wait for a crossover with a certain family group?

I guess because no one in France at that time knew what a Banshee was supposed to be...

Aside from Wolverine's brown costume, you didn't really do any costume redesigns the first time around.  Are you planning any this time?

Been kicking around some ideas in my head. Wondering if those epaulets on Kurt and Peter should be flattened, like Wolverine and Kitty.

The Red Ghost is not a mutant!

Neither is Sauron. Or MODOK.

I prefer Wolverine's brown costume, and I always ignored how his epaulets worked without sleeves to be sewn onto. This talk of tweaking Nightcrawler and Colossus' costumes has me thinking now. Should I just credit unstable molecules? I can go with that....

But Lykos gave us “non-mutant variant,” and you don’t know what MODOK is up to down there in the Savage Land.
