I'm not sure what I think of it, the art is okay but the dialogue is pretty awkward in spots. Is this supposed to be Rachel at the end in the tube thing?
-----------------------------------

No it's Madeline Pryor...according to the story, a piece of Jean's soul was inside The Phoenix "guiding her" and when The Phoenix was destroyed, the soul piece went back to Jean in the cocoon, but Jean "rejected" it after being made aware in that split second of all the damage The Phoenix had done, so the soul piece went looking for the next best thing:  the clone of Jean Grey made by Mr. Sinister, Madeline Pryor....Maddie had no soul so Jean's piece gave her one....eventually Jean woke from the cocoon, missing memories, telepathy and a piece of her soul, until she fought the now evil Maddie, who in an effort to take out Jean, committed psychic suicide in the hopes of dragging Jean with her...instead, Jean survived and finally recovered her missing piece of soul along with all of the memories of The Phoenix and Maddie........

"I wasn't the only one? Phew."

There's no way to ask without sounding snarky, so I'll
just go ahead - is this the first page of the thread
you've looked at?

"The Blue Area blue—er—blew my mind when I first read FF 13. It was introduced so casually, as if it was something everyone already knew about."

--

I must be on this forum for too long, because I wanted to say pretty much the exact same thing - using the term "matter of fact" instead of "casually".

I had the same reaction to the Savage Land.

Side note: I thought I remember reading that the Savage Land was _under_ Antarctica, which I don't get since there's sunlight. So I just Googled "The Savage Land under Antarctica". The very first two images that show up are a double-page spread from XMHY and one from Alan Davis. Good company to be in!

The Savage Land is in a deep valley--quite an extensive one--that is below the level of the ice, but not under it. It is shielded by a constant cloud cover.

(When I was working on HIDDEN YEARS I referred to the Savage Land as being "beneath the Antarctic ice." Without any consultation with me, this was changed to "on"--which makes perfect sense, right?)*

Saw this over at CAF, and then dug up a better image at Heritage. Laughed when I saw that it "only" sold for $5,175.00 in May 2005.

JB:

"But here’s a question for the Forum: What’s a typical set of John Byrne tropes? Honesty, please!"

I don't know about these tropes, except maybe the
exceptional use of interludes to set up future stories,
but I do know that whenever I read a John Byrne comic, I
feel most comfortable, like this is the way comics
should read. Regardless, John's comics are clearly the
default setting for me and my mind.

And since I am not actually suggesting a title and I'm
not making a Barry Smith joke, I guess we could call
this series X-Men: Black With Stars.

Here's a fun fact and a random question:

1. Did you know that your visuals in Uncanny 108 - 143 and the in text narration of AF establish a fairly concrete timeline for the Marvel Universe?  Based on the visuals and text, Jean joins the X-Men 17 years ago (7 years pass from X-Men #1 to X-men 137 and of that, Jean spends a year and a half as Phoenix)

2.  If Marvel fell in love with you and gave you complete control over the X-universe, and you were so inclined, what would be your ultimate dream book to produce in the current X-universe?
