Of course the biggest "What could have been" is what if everybody at DC was on the same page after CRISIS and all the books started fresh, not just WONDER WOMAN.  Or, really, what if they DIDN'T.  (JB has said how he could have just started fresh with SUPERMAN without doing a big reboot and just continued on, dropping the bad and keeping the good.)

Not to beat a dead horse, but NEW TEEN TITANS, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, and INFINITY INC. were DC's best books at the time (as evidenced by, among other things, them being the flagship titles printed on better paper).  If nothing else, you'd think there would have been a plan not to sabotage these books by eliminating foundational elements from each (Wonder Girl's very existence was a big mess with the elimination of Wonder Woman's history, LEGION went off the rails without Superboy's existence, and the elimination of Earth 2 not only exploded INFINITY INC. and ALL-STAR SQUADRON but ruined the raison d'etre for the Huntress and Power Girl, two potential super-stars).

So, yeah, what if there WAS a post-Crisis plan?

Re: Crisis: When you have arrogance, you don't need a plan.

As for the idea of Alfred molesting Bruce, if nothing else, it makes me glad that Uncle Phillip is no longer a part of the history. Once they got past the idea of Alfred, they'd have landed squarely on Bruce's Uncle.

When Kirby came over to DC, he asked what the company's lowest selling book was, so he would not be displacing a creative team who weren't already on their way out. He was told Jimmy Olsen, and that's why Darkseid, Morgan Edge, and the Fourth World all have their origins in that title. I have occasionally wondered what would have occurred had DC replied differently and Kirby has assumed control of Wonder Woman instead. The New Gods would likely have come in literally replacing the old and causing no end of chaos for the Amazons and Paradise Island. It is an image to conjure with.

According to Mark Evanier, it's a myth that Kirby asked to take over DC's lowest-selling title. Kirby actually was not interested in doing someone else's characters, but for budgetary reasons DC insisted he do at least one established title, rather than only starting all new books.  The reasons Jimmy Olsen was chosen were that Infantino wanted Kirby to revamp Superman, and Kirby said he didn't want to take an assignment away from someone else.  Jimmy Olsen had no regular artist because Pete Costanza had just retired, so it fit the bill.
