In the Dark Phoenix Saga, when Storm with Colossus, Wolverine and Professor-X are captured by the Hellfire Club, she had some hidden secret things (lockpicks, tag with a phone number,...) and no utility belt!

Chris trying to turn Storm into Modesty Blaise is not something you’re likely to see referenced here.

Chris Claremont seemed to want to turn Ororo into a (bad- ass dark) superhero irrespective of her mutant powers.

JB,
Great page this morning. I have a feeling issue 12 will be where many of beans will begin to get spilled.

The timeless, ageless goddess of GSXM1 certainly got dragged down to ground level pretty fast once Len Wein was gone. Including making Ororo American and tying her beginnings to the Suez conflict. sigh

Agreed—altho calling her that didn’t turn her into a DC character.

Mr. Byrne, in the last panel, it looks as if the wings of Phoenix torso wear are kinda forming Marvel Girl's mask. Is that just a coincidence?
And it would seem that Phoenix is both arbitrary, childish, and - if I can say so - JEALOUS of Jean Grey! Deadly enough on her own*, it seems that Lilandra is a petulant demi-god. This could be unleashing a tremendous threat - was Jean's will considerably stronger than Lilandra's?
TANGENT: It surely seems that Mr. Claremont felt that HE owned the characters, created them, and could do with them what he wanted. So we got Modesty Storm, multi-powered Nightcrawler, and... what else? A mentally simple Peter? Banshee replacing Professor X as team leader?
He was the main writer, but he didn't create a few of them - and he seemed to vary from Len Wein's ideas as fast as possible.
No wonder you got frustrated, Mr. Byrne!

Is that just a coincidence?•• Totally. –––––––– multi-powered Nightcrawler •• That one can't be laid at Chris' doorstep. Dave brought the character to the party in that condition. It springs from Nightcrawler not having been created as a mutant. Really, he should never have been in the X-Men to begin with.

I agree about Nightcrawler: he simply does not fit into the model that Lee-Kirby created, and nothing but that model should determine whether a new character works as an X-Men member or not.
As has been discussed many times on the JBF, the "Nightcrawler" name doesn't work either, but that leads me to a quick tangential question for JB: if Wolverine had not had claws, what do you think would've been a proper X-Men name for him given his actual mutant powers?

I suppose his real power is his healing factor, so a name that reflects that would be appropriate. Mr. Immortal maybe? No, I think that's been used. . . . . .
