If [Wolverine] were the only exception, I think the X-Men concept could accommodate him pretty easily. But he's not the only exception, and I guess he probably never could have been.

The real problem is that it comes down not so much to “exceptions” as, well, sloppy writing. Ignoring Stan’s “AN extra ability” rule in favor of the Cool Factor.

So, Nightcrawler is cool—and also Dave’s personal favorite, as well as avatar in the book. So Kurt gets all the toys.

Really enjoying all of ELSEWHEN in every capacity. Glad to see the X-Men in good hands again especially Cyclops.

JB, any reason you didn't do the covers for each of the issues?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered before.

Covers were/are my least favorite part of the job.

Which is totally ironic since so many of even just the Uncanny run are so iconic.

If Nightcrawler only had one power, what would it be?

I'd go with teleportation. Disappearing in shadow has limited use, and wall crawling is Spidey's shtick. Is Kurt's agility a manifestation of his mutant ability as well? If so, he shares that with the Beast.

I guess you could argue that being able to scale walls is a result of Nightcrawler's unusual feet and hands (and tail?)... But that's still a separate power, right? Hmmm... Is the disappearing in shadow thing a result of Kurt being partially in the dimension that he accesses when teleporting?

My problem with Nightcrawler is that there’s no single power that works to make him the same character. The teleportation? If he looks like a r’glar guy, how does that fit into his backstory? He needs to be monstrous in appearance, but without the other bells and whistles he’s just a regular guy who happens to be blue and furry. Does hypertrichosis count as a super power?

Keep Nightcrawler's monstrous form as a deformity of his mutant status (even though the deformity is really just aesthetics since physically he's at the top level of natural athletes).  His sole superpower is teleportation.  Make his acrobatics at the same level of "non-super powered superheroes" like Captain America and Daredevil, adjusted for his unique physique.  Dump the become invisible in darkness.

That’s pretty much how I’d like to see it, Chris.

I wonder how much Cockrum and Wein intended his teleportation powers to be played up.
He only used it once in his first appearance, and that was well after his introduction in which he was being pummeled by a mob and about to be staked  and still didn't use teleportation.
Then next issue didn't use it at all!

Did the clinging to wall ever get used much?

A window into Len Wein's intentions for Nightcrawler are seen in the two-issue
Spider-Man appearance he wrote. There, he is a brooding and driven character
with a hair-trigger temper and he definitely uses his teleportation and wall-
crawling abilities.

JB has said that he finally realized Nightcrawler is comic-relief around the time
he was about to leave the book. I think my favorite version of the character is
from the story where he and Wolverine face Wendigo.

So are we saying it's only 'okay' to be a Mutant/X-man if you only have ONE power?

Banshee? Nope, sorry. Flight PLUS sonic scream - you're out.

Sunfire? Nope, sorry. Flight PLUS flame/fire blasts - you're out.

Storm? Nope, sorry. Flight PLUS wind manipulation PLUS conjuring up water PLUS command of electricity/lightning - you're out.

Thunderbird? Nope, sorry. Speed plus strength plus (etc) - you're out.

Marvel Girl? Telekinesis PLUS telepathy - you're out.

Etc.

These stories are glorious, fantastical escapism where literally anything goes. No sooner do we try and shackle the narrative with any burdens of realism, then it loses a part of its wonder.

Nightcrawler will ever remain a personal favourite. Weird appearance, teleportation, agility, and hides in shadow. So what? How COOL is that?

Something tells me to brace myself for what's coming, however! ;-)
