Would you have wanted to go down a road like this with Lilandra back in the day JB?

Dark Phoenix as originally conceived was Jean and only Jean. She would have been a recurring villain. (Sometimes I imagine Shooter in his CONSEQUENCES phase being around when the Joker was introduced. As most of you probably know, the character died at the end of his debut, but the editor saw potential and had the last panel redone. I can see the Whim of Iron insisting he stay dead. CONSEQUENCES!!)

Ouch! And I was wondering how Charles would react to Lilandra being the host for the Phoenix now. I was anticipating emotional pain, of course, but... ouch!

It's amazing (uncanny?) how our pre-conceptions impact our take on things. I think many of you figured this was a do over more in line with the original plans for Jean, so Jean was not just alive, but still Jean. However, I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek and know differently. Unfortunately, in my mind, this meant the Phoenix didn't need a host, so I was totally surprised by Lilandra being the new host, even though maybe I shouldn't have been, and that's my point. Now I have no idea what to expect and can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks again, John!

I was anticipating emotional pain, of course, but... ouch!•• Xavier's relationship with Lilandra, his feelings for her, have taken a helluva hit from the Shi'ar's treatment of Jean. More, now that Charles is learning there were layers to all this that he never even suspected.

I think that's one of the most interesting and yet natural developments to come out of this story.
Charles is watching a woman he loves lobotomize a young woman he's known as a student and almost a foster daughter for years. It would be almost impossible for him not to be furious with Lilandra over all this... and perhaps come to hate her.

The question raised by all this is how long has the Phoenix been manipulating/controlling/coercing/working with Lilandra???
JB has been providing us with a lot of clues in this this issue and the interludes in previous issues. Might be time to reread those previous issues and see what I've missed...

I get the impression that there is no more Lilandra, there is only Phoenix. Or rather, Lilandra's thirst for power was all consuming, if you'd prefer.
I've always liked the way JB does the "psychic eyes" (in the panel where Charles takes over Jean's telepathy). I can just imagine how it might be colored (pastel to make it pop).
Also, Kitty's predicament made me laugh out loud.

Question asked. Question answered!
It wasn’t who I was hoping...but the reveal did not disappoint!
Storm will have to show us a level of power I’m not sure we’ve ever seen from her to survive....IF she has sufficiently pissed Phoenix off.

There was something about the way Neal drew the X-men in plain-clothes that really gave you the sense that they were young and stylish. If Lee/Kirby X-men felt 1950's, then Adams clearly felt early 1960's.
Happy Birthday, Neal. Hope it's a good one.
