It would be... Sprite, surely? A sprite is a ghost. Ghosts walk through walls. It does the job.

Regarding the sixth panel, I honestly didn't see this as a problem when I first scanned the page, but now that you mention it, I see what you're talking about, JB. It is definitely a difficult one to draw -- maybe if the debris was denser, maybe?

For the safety cube, how about: pocket bunker?

I didn't see the "Superman" panel either.  Perhaps if I knew nothing at all about the character and I was just looking at the art, I might have done so.

Then again, the same page shows Kitty falling through several floors without leaving holes, so... maybe you're being over critical?

Yes. Like Marvel Girl --- her power was to sell more Marvel comics.

Kitty being able to swim through solid material is not new -- Claremont had her using her powers like this in the 80s. For example, in UXM 209 Leland sends Colossus sinking deep into the ground and Kitty 'swims' down to pull him back up above ground.

What seems new to me, though, is the ability to sense what is around her.

In canon, Kitty cannot breathe while phasing, so she holds her breath*. Not sure if that was JB's intent, but it does add a sensible limitation to her power. How much danger could Kitty ever be in if she can just keep herself phased during entire battles?

*Maybe I'm just misremembering....makes sense that she cannot breathe while phasing inside of solid objects, but I don't recall about her phasing while in open air.

Phasing Girl? "Just a girl going through a phase" (get it) ;-)?

I like how coldly analytical Professor X is. He uses Jean’s telekinesis to save those who need saving, but let’s Wolverine fall, knowing he’ll be fine,... eventually.

I mean, Collossus, sure, he’s pretty much invulnerable; but Wolverine really feels all his injuries before he heals them, I would imagine.

On the positive side, it says something about his faith in Kitty's training.

That's what I thought, but figured I must have had it wrong when JB said, "Sprite I just thought was cute." I probably just misunderstood.

As a kid, I played around with alternate names for the new X-Men. They were Alloy, Balor, Goblin, Caterwaul, Honey Badger, Mister Mental and Weather Witch. (I can't remember what I came up with for Marvel Girl.)

I thought it was cute, and fit the character.

Stan had two basic rules for naming.

1: The name must give some idea of what the character does.

2: sometimes by a process of elimination, the nam should single the character out in a group.

Those rules were certainly in effect for all of the "early" Marvel creations. Is there a character or comic book that can be singled out as the first departure from those guidelines?

Back on the topic of X-MEN: ELSEWHEN... When Pablo "brings objects to life," I wonder if they are following general mental commands like "attack" and "defend," or more specific directions like "use your rock-formed first to smash that metal guy over the head." If it's the former, it could be that this the main difference between his abilities and those Ashley possesses.
