I love how you just have one caption and let the pictures speak for themselves.

The use of negative space in depicting Lilandra's bed sheets in the fourth panel is particularly cool!

If they knew that Pheonix was a separate entity that had been removed from Jean Gray's body, what was the point of punishing her with a "lobotomy?"

I'll echo Brennan from a couple of pages back when he said this is your best work, JB. While I will always love your Next Men, FF, X-Men, Alpha Flight, and Superman, this is next level stuff. Way to go!

Absolutely incredible - the art on this page is fantastic. No need for description as the images speak for themselves.

Eric: As for that final panel - it's scary enough to surpass "bad ass." That's just sheer, utter, threatening. BEAUTIFUL!

Agreed, but I can't help adding one more adjective: sad. I truly feel for the destruction here, caused by an ill-fated, but sincere and dedicated ruler.
This is a beautiful nightmare.

Was Lilandra lying when she said (in the Untold version of issue 137) that it was a psychic lobotomy that would exciae the parts of Jean's brain that related to her mutant abilities? It appears that they actually sucked/extracted the Phoenix entity out of her. Was it this extraction that caused the damage to Jean's mind? Was it even general knowledge at this point that there actually was an entity and it wasn't just Jean's powers enhanced by cosmic rays?
* I've just noticed that at least part of my question was answered a few posts above!

These last few days I am appreciating John's varied line weights and borders, showing texture and conveying different materials. The metal of Lilandra's armor looks different than the metal surrounding her in her craft, and the fabric of the attendants mid-scorching conveys a terribly different "feel" than in the previous panels. Even the white hair of A'Raki's head and beard have a craggly texture that contrasts from the younger coiffures.
The observations shared by others (pointing out Lilandra's arm feathers, and the video in another thread with Neal Adams talking about line weights when inking) are very helpful in appreciating the subtle details that are produced by practiced artisans like JB.

Again, I am amazed at how my misconceptions blinded me to what was going on, but here we are. Wow!

…Lilandra's arm feathers…•• These are not new, are they? Didn't I show them when Lilandra and Xavier were off on vacation together, and she was in Earth garb?
