David P. - Man, you made me squirt Diet Pepsi through my nose! I'm charging you up for a new monitor!
And you're exactly right. I wouldn't get in Gladiator's way for love or money.
I have no problem believing that Phoenix isn't powerful enough to destroy Gladiator, usually. However, we saw in Mr. Byrne's FF 251 (sic?) that Gladiator's powers work because he believes in them. If his confidence is assailed, then he can even be taken down by a bonk on the head by Captain America's shield.
Irreconcilable? Not at all. All the force Phoenix can bring to bear is not enough to harm Gladiator - but she might be able to affect his mind, and she could knock him silly - but couldn't destroy his form.
My consideration is - if I recall correctly - the Kree, Skrulls, etc. were perfectly willing to destroy Earth (or have it done by their agent, the Shi'ar) to stop Phoenix. I wonder whose attention Lilandra will draw? Can't wait! (Corollary: in X-Men - 136, maybe? - Dr. Strange, the FF, and the Silver Surfer* all noted Jean's transformation and exit from Earth. I wonder who'll show up as a cameo this time.)
*Gee, it's sure a good thing that Phoenix could fly out of Earth orbit faster than the Surfer can fly. Bet I know who came up with THAT one..)
