Phoenix is tricky to write. If we’re not careful we’ll find ourselves with Beyonder-esque “can do anything” madness. So I try to avoid situations in which it/she has to pull something new from behind the curtain. Gladiator is Superman, so I imagine his incredibly dense molecular structure—even as a manifestation of psi powers—makes him close to indestructible. Which is not the same as unkillable. And, Tarentino style, you already know what’s coming.

Brian M., I always assumed that Phoenix had whatever powers she desired. But it's a big assume; we never saw the Phoenix WITHOUT being attached to Jean.* So you could be right. Then again... Reed Richards needed nothing more than an image inducer and Captain America's shield.
Yes, the Phoenix force showed up in Guardians of the Galaxy, Rachel of Future Past, X-Men/Teen Titans, and the two part Starjammers books. I'm not sure I can count any of those as canonical. I'll take Mr. Byrne's comments as the real deal, if he chooses to reply on this.

Gladiator vs. Phoenix will be one hell of a fight. Both physically and mentally as Gladiator deals with the fact he is throwing punches at Lilandra.

That the Phoenix force corrupted Lilandra is evidence enough that it has the power to affect minds.
Cape intact, hair all in place... Eep, we're going to see Gladiator get another beatdown.
Awesome panel on p14 of the Phoenix effect flaring over the city.
Also kind of awesome to just kind of mull over the words about Gladiator knowing what has happened and knowing what must be done... He knows he has to try and take out his sovereign, who is frighteningly powerful. Stirring stuff!
And, that is a great sneak peak of Nightcrawler you gave us a couple of days ago. Fun to see all the tiny people on the pavement and the dinky cars, buses and trucks lined up on the road. All too easy to glance at something like that and not fully appreciate the work that has to go in to depict different models of cars, to include a variety of vehicles, to draw all those many edges of, say, a bus in perspective. Great stuff.

"too powerful to be destroyed by the Phoenix... in this way"
********
You’re adding your own dialogue to fit your own perception of the character.
>>
Quite true, I am! No intent to change the written word actually -I'm only getting at the fact that no one (even Dark Phoenix) is incapable of losing or even being destroyed/killed under the right circumstances. It's sorta like Jim Starlin having Thanos tell the elder of the universe, the runner, that he actually could age (using that pesky time gem to do it) when he thought himself immortal (turns out he was just incredible loooooong lived).

I'm currently watching an episode of the old DENNIS THE MENACE television show, and that may have something to do with my mind reading the above as "LI'l Phoenix" instead of what Brian actually typed.

"Gladiator is too powerful to be destroyed by the Phoenix"
------------------------------------------------------
Sorry but Mr.Byrne already did show in Fantastic Four #250 that Gladiator has vulnerabilities, not only mental (as when Reed Richards made him doubt about his abilities) but also physical as when affected by an specific radiation.

Mr. Byrne wrote "GLADIATOR IS TOO POWERFUL TO BE DESTROYED BY THE PHOENIX."
And since he's actually presenting this tale, I'm going to go with his take on the Strontian's resiliency until I see something different.

Hmmm... A quick online search shows Gladiator has had some ups and (serious) downs in terms of how he has been handled by writers since JB had him battle the FF.
Gladiator was defeated by Cannonball. That's right... Cannonball.
Oh, and he has a son named Kid Gladiator.

Ha! Until I read your post Wallace, I was reading it the same way. Kind of like Phoenix II.

===============================================
I remember that issue where Cannonball defeated him. My late little brother had it and after I read it, I said this is one of the reasons why I stopped reading X-Men comics.
Kid Gladiator?????? WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I would assume that as an alien from another galaxy, Gladiator or his son would not stoop to such a label.
