"For those who might have missed the origin of this bit of “humor”, Shooter complained that a big shot of the villain on the last page “just turns the page into an ad for the next issue.”None of the rest of us could quite understand why that was a problem."

Erm - isn't that the MAIN purpose of every issue-ending cliff-hanger? JS's opinion is clearly at odds with the majority of comics creators AND READERS. Blimey.

That might be the best Dr. Doom you've ever done. Wow!

I'm beginning to notice a pattern in Elsewhen... where each issue is my favorite until the next one comes along. That's a pretty darn good trick!

No one draws Dr. Doom like you, JB! The definitive look for the character, in my opinion. I'm so happy to see him show up here!

Agree that was probably my favourite every issue of Elsewhen. Love that JB is getting to do his own Wolverine: Origin. Not many more people have ever deserved to it more.
And thanks for the Kirby page above. Even though 2001 is my favourite ever film, I have never looked at the Marvel adaption.

That is one magnificent page. It benefits the closing of the issue and pulls readers into the next - I don't get the Shooter policy.By the way, those are such well-drawn hands...

As I recall from the time, it was Roy Thomas wanting to do his adaptation of THE WIZARD OF OZ that led to 2001. MGM agreed to the former on the condition Marvel did the latter. It was given to Kirby at a time when fans were seriously rejecting him, and Marvel was looking for “harmless” projects he could do. This is what gave rise to the ongoing 2001 book, which spun off MACHINE MAN and DEVIL DINOSAUR.
