Though if all characters took sensible precautions it could spoil the fun. Imagine if Reed made Johnny wear an unstable molecules parachute that deployed in the event of an uncontrolled fall. We'd miss out on those dramatic rescues/recoveries!

Reminds me of discussions I've had with other writers, about how the cell phone as done untold damage to the building of suspense. Where once it was possible to isolate characters to place them in danger, now (often contrived) reasons must be invented for why they aren't using their phones.

Love that Ben Grimm panel on today's page-- nobody punches through things like the Thing!

Just a tangential comment, yes, any time I think about some of the great noir or spy novels I've read and loved, all written and set 50-60 years in the past, I can't but think about how virtually every single one would be impossible or nearly so, or at best partially plot-ruined, just because of the cellphone!

Another freakin' masterpiece. I wish I could afford tis art almost as much as I wish it were for sale.

Then again, I suspect today's page would already be assigned to someone. Sigh. I will re-read it five or six times, at least. Ben Grimm. Doom. The Torch. Spidey. Kurt. Magneto. EVERYONE in character and story on a one page story!!! LOVE IT!

This came to mind just last issue with Kurt's "Somehow I must contact the rest of the team!"  Somehow, "Siri, FaceTime the other X-Men!" would not have been the same ...

Speaking from experience, the easiest thing they could do
is just establish that the phones work at the speed real
phones work.
Instead, phones work at the speed of plot - rocket when
looking for information, snail when in a crisis.

mMny is the time I have wanted to take a photo and my
phone has taken too long to open the camera app.

It would be pretty easy to say that, due to all the weird energies permeating New York, cell service is pretty terrible at the best of times. That strikes me as a plausible way to get around the cell phone problem.

Hey, you just have the same plot challenges and opportunities that Star Trek has had with communicators and the transporter for the last 50+ years :) < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Best thing (!) about the panel is that Ben is clearly enjoying throwing down with Doom, from the smile to the dialogue.

Somewhere along the way Spider-Man had a moment wondering what it would be like to be as strong as the Thing. “Must be like the whole world is made out of papier-mâché!”

This very much informs the way I handle the character. The idea that he has to constantly hold back, except in battle!

I imagine Ben finds a lot of joy in being able to cut loose, when everything around him is as fragile as champagne flutes and eggshells are to us.
