How did you get involved with STAR BRAND?

As a favor for Howard Mackie. Same way I ended up on IRON MAN.

I really loved your Iron Man.
I was never sure what I felt about Star Brand, although how you managed to
bring it full circle was interesting, along with the general direction the NU
took with The Pitt

Was there any specific direction Howard wanted you to take?

I bought the first issue of Star Brand by JB. Only issue I ever bought however. I know the series always had nice art. But I've never liked Shooter's writing.

JB, do you remember how much New Universe stuff you read to prepare for writing Star Brand?

I’d been glancing at the New Universe titles, but not paying much serious attention. I think Roy Thomas summed it up nicely when he called them TV movies.

SB is a hidden little gem in the Byrne catalogue. I quite enjoyed it. I picked
up all the previous issues a few years back because a) I’d never read them
and b) JRjr/Williamson art and it was typical Shooter fare. It would’ve fit
right in with his work at Valiant, actually. But man, that art was beyooteeful.

An important rule I set for myself on STAR BRAND was that I would not deliberately mess up what Shooter had created. First, that would have been too easy and second it was what most readers expected. So instead I burrowed down into the established mythos looking for new and hopefully logical ways to interpret it.

Still, there was no good way to get around the fact that the, well, Star of the book was taking advantage of a mentally challenged girl (that randomly quacks like a duck! WTF??) This was the Editor-In-Chief writing this!!!!

Shooter’s Big Rule for the New Universe was that it would be set in “the world outside your window.” Which meant nothing could happen in the stories that would end up in the newspaper or on the nightly news.

Except in STAR BRAND, where one of his first stories involved terrorists using a nuclear device to hijack a cruise ship in New York harbor.

I couldn't convince myself to spend paper route money on New Universe titles, not when there were other books with "real" characters that I actually cared about.
