If we lived in the West Wing (TV show) universe, VP Harris would name Mitt Romney as her running mate.

This is a sad day for democracy. Is Joe incompetent? There are arguments to be made on both sides about that. It is certainly an incredibly noble act by a person putting country before self and should be applauded as such. Moving forward, I personally believe Kamala Harris is the best choice given her primary performance and her oratory skills and track record are outstanding. However, to me, she has two major hurdles to overcome (and please bear in mind Im a Brit so have no horse in this race): her gender and her heritage. It is apparent, objectively, that a certain percentage of the US population STILL has issues with minorities and/or females in positions of authority and this, sadly, will have an effect on votes, however qualified or skilled a candidate is.On the plus side, reproductive rights is a big issue for this election cycle (notice how quiet the GOP has been on this, they know it's a losing policy they have in mind) and the female vote will be a big factor this time around. Age and cognitive function are also the big weapons Democrats have now, Kamala can run rings around the Dumpster any day and twice on Sunday, and now that Joe has been eased out, playing up Trump's angry old man routine can be countered by a younger, sharper, more savvy blue candidate. As a comicbook reader of many years I have followed the culture and entertainment of your great country with enthusiasm and joy. I have, quite literally, never been more frightened for the future of that country as I am today at the possibility of a second Trump term in office. I have studied the outlines of the Project 2025 proposal and am in no doubt that much of its contents will be implemented and your democrary and hard fought freedoms will be lost if a MAGA Republican party are victorious. That, I fear, can only have a negative impact on the rest of the world.

Several Republicans are calling on Biden to resign now, which is of course bullshit. But beyond that, I do not understand the strategy there. Having Harris assume the presidency would likely strengthen her as a candidate by making her the incumbent. I don't see how that would be good for the Republicans. Is there some angle there I'm missing, or are they just being bastards and piling on Biden without any strategic considerations?

Resigning is considered something you do in disgrace (Nixon). Opting not to run for the sake of the country is considered noble, the last thing the Republicans want as a final brand of the guy who beat your candidate in the last election.

Yeah, that Mike Johnson really is a piece of work isn't he. If I might use a term we have here for such a person: he's a proper bellend!

No.
When Nixon resigned, Nelson Rockefeller was picked as VP.
The Speaker of the House at that time was Carl Albert

Harris couldn't even get more votes than Tulsi Gabbard during the primaries.

I imagine Harris would do better now.
Btw I googled Tulsi Gabbard. She's still salty about Kamala Harris winning.

Time to pass the damn ball to Kamala and set some picks! She’s not Hillary. No Clinton baggage to drag around. No BS FBI investigations to get dropped on her at the last minute. The GOP now has to call her “DEI” to her face on national TV, because they have no problem doing it on their own propaganda networks. And they need to hear her clap back.
She can fight back with Trump toe to toe with a prosecutor’s aim. She can make the case of Trump’s criminality. Something our media refuses to do.`
Democrats who made their doubts about Biden so public, need to now SHUT. ALL. THE. WAY. UP! And they need to galvanize around Kamala to unheard of levels.
Time to make history. Again.
