"There is something deeply busted in our political system that these are our only choices."
Agreed. The media keeps repeating the statistic that 70% of Americans didn't want another Trump v. Biden matchup, yet somehow that's exactly what we (collectively) chose for our country, and it seemed inevitable. The biggest loser here wasn't Trump or Biden, it was us.
Props to CNN for the way they ran the debate, but I've never seen a more dour looking panel of moderators.

As bad as Biden's performance was, I will still vote for him.
No fucking way will I vote for 45.

The guy who shouldn't be President vs. the guy who CANNOT be President again.
The last 4 years have gone by rather quickly seems like Biden just got elected. The best thought I have is how neither of these guys will be on the ballot 4 years from now!

I can't cite a source, unfortunately, but I've seen some online chatter to the effect that the orange goblin has said that the amendment specifically means *consecutive* terms. So yeah, it may be that he's already at it.

It's pretty clear, of course:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once

There's an opportunity here to seize the narrative. Nobody liked either's performance, so it's not like Trump captured the hearts and minds of those who watched. Biden could withdraw at the convention for the same reason he says he ran in 2020: to stop Trump. He could tout being proud of his term as President but that it was time for a new generation of leadership, upon which EVERYONE agrees, and whomever picks up the baton swears by his administration's achievements. The Republicans wind up looking like they are chained to a compromised candidate selfishly consumed with the past and incapable of listening to what the country wants, while the Democrats look more responsive and looking forward to the future and capturing the imagination of the newly possible. But that would take courage to make such a gamble, and I don't know if the Democrats have it in them.

If the Republicans change the rules for Trump to run for a third term, he may have to go up against Barack Obama.

Replacing Biden at this late date is a guarantee that Trump wins, and I hate to say it, rightfully so. The primaries are long over, and nobody that votes Democrat would have a say on who the nominee is. I rail enough about how the current primary system is almost as bad an issue as the Electoral College. By the time primaries roll around to NY/NJ for example, the nominee is basically already decided, and the voting pool is vastly diminished*.
*I can unerstand the potential retorts to this, but if I actually had a choice, I might have voted for Christie. Yes, he was once a Trump toadie, and I won't go as far as to say that he'd be a good president, but he did commit political suicide by admitting those mistakes.

Historically, the outcome of debates do not influence how people vote. I recall Obama having a bad debate against Mitt Romney and still getting re-elected. Anyway, I cut Biden some slack since he is a stutter and had a cold.
Regarding Trump staying in power for a third term if re- elected, I think he will enlist Don Jr. to take over his supporters in the Republican Party and keep it in the family.

If Biden wins (which is certainly a possibility, albeit one that is difficult to feel optimistic about) then I see no reason why Trump might not run again in 2028. And given his bizarre (and to me inexplicable) political resiliency I would not be surprised if he got the nomination again under those circumstances.
