Over on Facebook, Michael Avon Oeming shared a letter he received from Alex Toth in 2001.  LINK

Toth asks "You've been stung by the Mignola / Timm / Griest / Munoz / Pratt / Byrne / Staton bug!  Obviously - Yes?"

Pretty cool that Toth was aware of JB's work.  Question for JB, did you ever have any interaction with Toth that you'd be willing to share?  Thank you.

I met Toth once. My first San Diego Con. Terry Austin introduced us.

It was pretty much a drive-by. No stories to tell.

BTW - Toth rhymes with Both.  I pronounced it like Goth for many decades before reading the truth.

Would "Griest" have been Paul Grist?

Thank you for the response, JB.

Colin Ian Campbell, I assumed Toth was referring to Paul Grist.

Based on later readings of his correspondence with others, I was little surprised at the breadth of later artists that he was reading.  I know that John Hitchcock was sending him various artists' work for him to read.

Toth’s handwriting looks like his artwork!

I wonder what he was getting at that he grouped all those artists together?

Good question!  They have totally different styles.

Yeah, I can't figure out what specific through-line Toth is implying with that group. I'd argue that at least a couple of them (Muñoz and Mignola*) have more in common with Toth himself than with others on that list.

*Depending on when this list was compiled - Mignola came out of the gate a pretty standard comic artist, and it took a few years for him to achieve his stripped down chiaroscurro mature style.

This kind of historical artifact makes me wish I knew more about the interactions of my artistic heroes in comics.

By coincidence, I just stumbled on this site that has interviews with people who worked at Continuity and the Kubert School -- and though it has nothing directly to do with Alex Toth or John Byrne -- I felt a surge of insight.

This interview with Greg Theakston alone leads to so many complex nuances about his relationship with Neal Adams. It's complicated to meet your heroes, let alone work with them. More interviews are linked at the bottom for anyone interested.
