I arrived too late for the 70's models that seem to be the board favorites - to this day, I don't think I've seen a copy of either Superman/Spider-Man or Batman/Hulk, much less read them. My first real crossover would be the X-Men/Teen Titans, which I definitely have more than fond memories of, but as a) I didn't read Titans, and b) it relied a lot on the Dark Phoenix storyline for whatever resonance it had and even THAT had happened about a year before I started reading comics.

So it's not exactly by default that JLA/Avengers is my favorite - both Captain America/Batman and Galactus/Darkseid are great, of course - but Perez's artwork was stunning (pretty much a career best, IMHO) and Busiek's story was a nice bit of seemingly bottomless fan service that still had something to say and nailed the characterizations. A near apotheosis of 80's comics, albeit 15 years later.

For JLA/Avengers, it simply wouldn't make any sense for two global superhero teams designed to fight world-threatening menaces to have never met before. Both teams had been well established for years.

This has been gnawing at me, so I did a little googling.

Before the rules were changed in 2023, every Major League baseball team did not get an opportunity to play every other MLB team.

That's an apt analogy, JB.

I used to love that the NL and AL played apart until the World Series.

Oh, and undoubtedly the AL was DC and the NL was Marvel. Yankees = Superman, Mets = Spider-Man!

Huh. I wasn't even aware that they changed that rule recently.

But they did start relaxing that back around 2000.
