THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT by Edgar Rice BurroughsAn interesting counterpoint to DEAD WAKE (which I continue to read), as this tale opens with the sinking of a Lusitania like liner by a German U-boat. At 80 pages barely more than a pamphlet, and Burroughs wastes the first two chapters by essentially putting Our Hero thru the same ordeal twice, once on the aforementioned liner, then again on a passing tug. I have not read much Burroughs, and while I definitely appreciate his ability to bang a noun into a verb, it's also true he never met a coincidence he didnt like!

THE SUBTLE KNIFE by Philip Pullman.
This is my first time reading the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. I enjoyed THE GOLDEN COMPASS (1 of 3) but this book (2 of 3), is slower going early in. I'm hoping it picks up.

Forgive me a tiny bit of thread drift, but I know from this thread that we have a few Bernard Cornwell fans here. His books about Uhtred the Saxon Warrior have been adapted to television into a series, The Last Kingdom, scheduled to debut at 10:00 p.m. EST this Saturday, Oct. 10 on BBC America. I suspect that it may also be available on the BBC America web site, but I haven't checked.

Just finished:
ORIGINS: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Donald Goldsmith. Published over ten years ago, but still an interesting read on how scientists have deciphered the clues to what happened from the moment of the Big Bang up to now.
WHILE I DISAPPEAR by Edward Wright. The second novel in his John Ray Horn mystery series. A solid read but not quite stellar enough to where I am going to hunt down the next book in the series.
Currently reading:
POTSDAM STATION by David Downing. The fourth book in his six volume mystery series set pre, during, and post WWII. I hope this one keeps the momentum going to where I will want to track down the final two novels.

I'm about a third of the way through The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which has been immensely interesting and illuminating.

I read that book back during my undergrad days. What an
incredible story! Enjoy it Richard! (If you do, you should
also check out Modern Times. It is a definitive book on
modern history.)
