Jerry and the Joker: Adventures in Comic Art by Jerry Robinson.  Some overlap with Robinson's earlier biographical book, especially, naturally, in his recounting of his meeting with Bob Kane and his creation of the Joker, but lots of new material as well.  Lots of original Robinson art from the master artist's personal collection, including two Batman stories. Not comic stuff, I know, but I particularly enjoyed the ten or fifteen pages reproducing sketches of actors and actresses he drew for the theatre magazine, Playbill.  Could go for a book devoted just to those.  This guy could really draw . . .

 KILLING FLOOR by Lee Child.

Do the Jack Reacher novels need to be read in order? Are they each self contained or is there a greater background thread connecting them?

************

Matthew:

There is no major background thread connecting the Jack Reacher novels. Reacher's past comes out as the books progress and there are even a couple of "flashback" novels that take place while he is still in the Army.

That said, I enjoy reading the novels in the sequence they are published because Reacher is constantly on the move from place to place, and knowing where he was in the previous book provides some context for each novel that follows.

I would certainly read the first three books (KILLING FLOOR, DIE TRYING, and TRIPWIRE) in sequence as they provide a lot of the backstory for Reacher's time in the service. And I would read the novels in sequence that lead up to NEVER GO BACK as they have a common thread of Reacher attempting to visit his old MP unit. But aside from those the books are fairly open to being read in any order.

Good advice from James! I would add, some of the editions include Jack Reacher short stories and will not be more costly than editions without. Of course I recently saw the short stories in a collected edition while at Costco.

Just ordered the TPB of TRIO. I managed to lose the individual issues whilst moving house in 2015.

Be nice to own it in TPB form.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1929) Erich Maria Remarque

It's been called "the greatest war novel of all time." Hyperbole like that has kept me from reading it, but last week I decided to give it a try, at last. The story is of young German soldiers in the trenches of the First World War.

One chapter in, and so far my only complaint is that the translation seems unnecessarily ponderous. Perhaps this reflects the original German.

Hopefully I'll learn a thing or two. Always seeking to improve my writing, grammar, punctuation, etc.
