My dog, Gwynne, is 14. This means she can no longer get thru a whole night without a couple of bathroom breaks. So I find myself sitting out on the terrace when the neighbors are dark. I’m far enough from the town center (about 12 miles) that most of the light pollution is low against the horizon. So I tend to spend more time than Ms Gwynne actually needs, sitting staring at the stars. Now, this is nothing like the skies I have seen on long highway trips, but the view is inspiring. I look at those hundreds of visible stars and can’t help but wonder how many eyes (or equivalent) are looking back. (I find myself thinking of extraterrestrials who might have evolved to perceive their environment with something like natural radar. They might be highly advanced, but have no sense of the sky [and universe] as we know it.)
