(Assuming that’s who they are)

••

Here we see a small downside of this serialized form. In this scene, as always, I made sure everyone was properly identified before we cut away to something else--but that identification happened on the SECOND page of the scene, as you can see in what I posted today.

Reading this in a comic, you'd only have had to wait a few seconds to be sure who was being attacked. Here, a day.

(And now we are about to begin a sequence of three pages, starting tomorrow, with no X-Men at all!)

That's a tragic thing to do, to such a lovely old cottage... :-(

I'm sure this will sound crazy*, but that last panel today, showing Alex using his powers, makes me see the scene in color... and Alex with NO color, using his blast full power.

Implying color with your art is brilliant, Mr. Byrne. Implying NO color is a colossal achievement!

*What, me crazy?

One of the lesser battles I’ve fought with some colorists over the years has been to convince them that WHITE is brighter than any color. Frank Miller had the same problem with an all-white DAREDEVIL cover. Right down to the wire they wanted to make it YELLOW.

So, yes, I would see that Havok panel as pretty much bleached out.

How did you do the pattern on the blanket?

Sorry to backtrack a little bit, but on page two, in the fifth panel, it appears that Gladiator is performing some form of salute.

Have we seen the salute before from him or anyone?

Not sure what you’re asking, Brian.

Is that a salute that you created for that moment?

I just thought it was a nice touch and was curious if it had any history.

Yes, the salute was spontaneous.

Well I had no problem deducing that the 2 characters were Lorna and Alex, specially when last panel we have the Sentinel screaming "Surrender Mutants". At the time (early 80s), how many mutant couples we had in the Marvel Universe? Also if this was colored, a green-haired female mutant should be immediately identified as Polaris and so, his blond-haired boy would be automatically identified as Havok for anybody with a basic knowledge of the X-Men.

Well we may get three pages with no X-Men at all but with Sentinels around, there are plenty of other mutants that can appear in the sequence! Perhaps one of the 3 pages is one of the pages already seen and yet not released in this post?

About last panel, any motive to not use the typical concentric circle pattern for Havok's powers?

Damn, the lighting in this issue is incredibly impressive!! And that cottage background in the first panel (of today’s page) is killer! Great art all around!!

I could see this issue as the opening of an X-Men film (or the start of a new X-Men series)... suspense is building and the audience is in great anticipation of the X-Men showing up. Very cool!!

Best Sentinel shot Ever ! Nobody claims about the
lack of my visually beloved Havok's ray "circles" ?
We are among experts, here ;)
