Small note: in the past four days I’ve done six pages, so staying well ahead of the posting schedule. (Posting #10, pencilling #13.)

When I first saw Spider-Man, my first thought was of the panel from
DoFP that had all those heads crossed out. Then I saw the blast at the
bottom of the page.

Love the 'Ditko eyes' in panel 5 as well as the Grey Morrow picture you posted. I've never seen that image before - creepy indeed! I honestly thought you were going to kill off Spider-Man until I scrolled down to the bottom of the page! Proper suspense in this age and age of 'TV' programmes killing off key characters on a whim.

Everything about the Spider-Page is amazing! Excellent explosion panel - I like
how the THOOM letters are blanked out in places. It's like the raw energy of
explosion is overwhelming eventhe sound.

I really like how this story can deliver epic space action, explosions, super-
fights, and killer cameos - all during a pandemic which has seized up
production on our favorite films and TV shows. It's good to go back to the
basics - the excitement of reading a great, new comic book story.

A nice reminder that these Sentinels mean business!  Great to see JB's version of Spider-Man front and centre, underarm webs and all.

I don't think I've posted on this forum in around 10 years though I've lurked here now and again.  But seeing this series has brought me back.  Excited to see new JB work and "my" Marvel back again (though it's 4 years earlier then when I actually started reading). I have two questions I hope someone can answer.

First, I understand this is an exercise of "what if" JB had stayed and X-Men and not Claremont.  But what is the point of departure, the change of Marvel Girl surviving in #137?  Does Elsewhen #1 continue from that?  Or did anything from real world issues # 138-143 "happen" in some way?

Second, I had always thought that the Phoenix Force was a retcon introduced to explain Jean Grey's return many years later.  I was under the impression that originally "Phoenix" was simply what you got when a mutant (Jean in this specific case) underwent cosmic ray exposure (if cosmic rays could give ordinary humans super-powers, what would it do to someone already having super-powers).  So my question is - was this actually the case?  Or was it intended at that time, or any other time before issue 138, that there was such a thing as the Phoenix Force (however defined) possessing Jean (or replacing her)?

And I have a follow up Q specifically for JB, if the Phoenix Force was not originally intended.  If so, what is the reason to go with the retcon explanation of the Phoenix Force as opposed to simply cosmic ray powered mutant?

Looking forward to the upcoming ride.

ELSEWHEN is in no way meant to represent what would have actually happened if I’d taken over the writing chores in 1980. This is a whole new ballgame, with my forty-years-later imagination leading me in very different directions—which includes folding in changes made to the Phoenix character years later.

As I noted elsewhere, it’s much the same approach I took with STAR TREK: NEW VISIONS, extrapolating from the existing timeline, but also cherry picking as I pleased from the lore that had developed after TOS went off the air.

Way ahead of schedule as always. JB, I was sure you would not break your historical streak of non-missed scheduled pages / issues, even for a (the best ever) fanfic. God bless you !
