Here's a quick question as I ruminate on how cool an Elsewhen "New Mutants" spin-off would be starring Kitty, Pablo, Ashley and Logan, with Scott and Jean as the "headmasters":
When developing the original concept that would become the New Mutants, did you have any other characters in mind besides Willie, Kitty and Caliban?

ITEM: It's amazing that the Shi'ar can fully restore (so they believe) Lilandra, but wouldn't try to help Jean Grey in the same manner. The Majestrix lover and companion held that girl in as high an estimation as his own daughter - but they left her challenged. Seems a little curious to me.
ITEM: Regeneration Tech vs. Resurrection A&M! The game that NEVER ends! :D
ITEM: As memory serves, Dave Cockrum designed the Legion Cruisers about the same time as he drew the Shi'ar ships, inside and out. For my money, the Shi'ar entire rip-off - er, homage to Star Trek seemed cheap, easy, and undeserving of a creative effort. On the other hand, Cockrum's design of those Legion cruisers made me gasp and drool, even if influenced by Star Trek also. But on one hand, it's as if someone decided to use the Enterprise as a basic design, and then updated, adapted, and modified it; the other was as if someone said, "Take the bridge crew of the Enterprise and give 'em feathers."
ITEM: I agree with many others. The way that you keep so many priceless jeweled eggs juggled in variable gravity amazes me, Mr. Byrne.

Those of us of a Certain Age will sometimes curse the name of Matt Jeffries, as his iconic Enterprise design immediately installed itself in our imaginations at a genetic level. So many struggled to escape the sauce-with-three-cylindrical-projections model.

It was an upgrade from the standard flying saucer and/or rocket of the 1950's.

It was an upgrade from the standard flying saucer and/or rocket of the 1950's. Very much so, altho it was Jeffries' original intend to avoid the saucer shape. He started with a sphere. (A favorite moment in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" is when Captain Christopher describes the Enterprise as "...big! Two cylindrical projections above, one below. Purpose unknown!" He does not feel the need to describe the saucer, as its shape would be assumed automatically!)

I would love to see a 3-D rendering, or even better a 3-D printed model of JB's dreadnaught or battle-cruiser from X-Men #135. As much as I appreciated Cockrum's bug ships, when I first saw that one, my mind automatically supplied the special effects and put it moving through space; it just seemed so right.
