Actually, that’s a very good question. Aside from being a cool-sounding code name, what was the rationale behind “Vindicator”? Was there ever any perceived national guilt Canada had to clear?••• Chris named him Vindicator against my wishes. As a fan character I’d named him Guardian after the verse in the Canadian national anthem, “we stand on guard for thee”. But when I brought him to Marvel I was informed there were “too many” Guardians already, so another name had to be chosen. Immediately wags around the Office started calling him “Major Maple Leaf”. When the final moment came Chris used Vindicator (actually the name of a WW2 American dive bomber) to “prevent” Major Maple Leaf becoming permanently attached. I was not happy, and when Alpha Flight (also a Chris name I did not like) got their own book, one of my conditions for working on it was that I could restore Guardian’s “real” name.
