I like "old" Jean and how she is finding her way in this world, even as it seems everyone wants her to be "new" Jean/Phoenix. I can see where she'd want a break from the X-Men and superheroics in general, since she's not only hearing it but catching stray thoughts from her friends as well.
Although this spurs a thought: JB, as you envision telepathy for Charles and Jean, is it "always on" or something that can be turned off entirely when they choose? I liken it to hearing, myself, but maybe it's more like vision where psychic eyelids can be closed.

Jean was such an integral part of the original team (and love of my life!) that I saw no logical reasoning behind having her leave. She didn’t stay gone very long, of course, even tho the Jean who came back wasn’t really Jean—and that’s before it was “revealed” that she REALLY wasn’t really Jean. And Chris, unfamiliar with the long history of the character, wrote her as the standard Claremont Woman.

Having Jean leave back when didn't make much sense to me either. It felt like "I want to clear away the old characters to make room for the new guys."But I like how you've taken things as they were left (which can be a mighty thankless situation) and given us some great stuff with Jean.

I'm excited to see Jean get fleshed out here...
I liked the Phoenix iteration, and subsequent Dark Phoenix, yes, but, I first met her as Marvel Girl in that MTU story drawn by Gil Kane, where Spider-Man lays a kiss on her (even though I was only a pre-teen, I thought that to be a bit out of character for him) -I was SO jealous! :)
Love a good Astral Battle! Also, the Cockrum costumes are just so Cockrum.....there's no getting past them! The boot flaps on Oracle, the pigtails and Legion costume on Astra....groovy.
Awesome page, and as always, looking forward to tomorrow!

Given how much you loved the character, were you upset that you found yourself in a situation back in 1980 where you had to kill her off? Or did you always have the idea that she was a separate entity in the back of your mind.

Do you remember around when you and Chris first started talking about her going bad?

Jean is getting to play Elasti-Girl from the Doom Patrol for a moment! :^)
I feel strongly she should never 'go back' to being Phoenix, especially when Jean never was! They never should have brought the two together 'again for the first time' that way in the late '90s comics. This latest sequence makes that clear enough I think. If they'd wanted so badly to have their Dark Phoenix they could've as we had Jocasta and The Wasp around at the same time, and there was already an alternate future Phoenix Jr. as it was, plus whatever the h*ll the Madelyn character was supposed to be, aside from a chance to see Paul Smith draw Dark Phoenix (and her alternate future son whichever one that was seemed to have inherited some Phoenix power; quite a dog's breakfast sorting Nate Grey and Cable and all this alternate future history stuff out, and Havok goes to another one and Madelyn is some kind of major power there).

Do you remember around when you and Chris first started talking about her going bad? ••• Let’s do some dodgy math. Checking, I find 122 has the first encounter between Jean and Jason Wyngarde. That issue has a June 1979 cover date, putting it on sale in March (roughly). So I would have penciled those pages around four months before that, or maybe December of 1978. Put three or four months ahead of that for Chris and me to be kicking it around, and the first steps on the path to Dark Phoenix would have likely been taken (after Steve Grant suggested it) circa September 1978.
