At the risk of revealing my ignorance (for starters, I've never read Blood and Trenches), Steve Queen's question brings up a question I've long had. I surmise that inking provides a sharper, richer image that shows up better on the printed comic book page but then we've occasionally seen pencils shot straight to a comic book (Cap 255 comes to mind) and the result was beautiful so it seems that sometimes pencils can work in certain situations. My question: is it possible to combine both pencils and inks in a finished product in certain panels where the shade gradations more easily achievable with pencils would otherwise disappear when fully inked? I have a feeling the answer is no because otherwise they would do it, but just curious what would happen.

Just about any combination is possible. On that Cap issue, I wanted to have the art shot from the pencils, but Marvel wouldn’t pay for gray tones, so I had to make the lines as dark as if they had been inked.

Working on STAR TREK i did some issues that I inked, then added pencil shading.

BLOOD AND TRENCHES I scanned from fully tonal pencils, then added the solid black gutters in Photoshop.

(Technically, my first published work at Marvel took the form of helping Duffy Vohland, now deceased, ink a Gulliver Jones story penciled by George Perez. It was for one of the black and white books, and Duffy was so late turning it in that we were actually adding pencil gray tones as we rode in on the subway from Queens!)

I adore fridays´s cliffhangers too! Makes my day and leaves a sweet felling during the weekend.

And I add another congratulation for third and fourth panel. I can not imagine a way in which could be fully satisfactory colored.

...Marvel wouldn't pay for gray tones...

I imagine the added expense capturing those extra gradations from pencils is one of the reasons it doesn't happen very often? Sad to think all the gorgeous pencil shadings of, say, a Gene Colan at his peak that were inked over and lost could have been captured if Marvel had been willing to spend some bucks. Anyway, sounds like I need to check out Blood and Trenches.

Ms. Grey looks to be in a lot of pain - of course, an interdimensional breach going on in/around your body has to be painful I'd assume.  Should be fun to see where this goes next week (or next month or whenever it is resolved).

The quasi-symmetry of Xavier's teeth.
Realism factor through the roof.

Not sure the market was open to black and white pencil only comics.

I’ve just gotten out of work, and, having now seen it on a bigger screen,
I have a new favorite John Byrne image. That 3rd panel is so brilliant.
I’ll stare at it forever. It belongs on display at LIMITED EDITION.

The table Jean is on reminds me of something Kirby would produce.  Awesome.

JB, the Gullivar Jones story you helped ink, was it the story mentioned here?:

It doesn't mention your name in the credits, but I figured you since were working as an assistant to Duffy, it was more of a "ghost" inker thing?
