Not sure the market was open to black and white pencil only comics. ***** Yeah, likely not. I wrongly assumed that the grey tones Marvel wouldn't pay for could have been reasonably incorporated into a color comic book but apparently that's not the case. Does that mean you wanted Cap 255 to be a B+W issue?

No, I wanted that issue in color, albeit muted “1940s” color. (That whole issue was a bit of a mess. Joe Rubenstein inked the last page, which Roger captioned “TODAY”. But Rog also gave him the credit “Inker of Today” and many readers missed the point. They assumed Rubenstein had inked the whole job.)

JB, the Gullivar Jones story you helped ink, was it the story mentioned here?••• That’s the one. I inked the female characters and, if memory serves, the tentacled monster—tho that might have been Bob Layton, who also assisted. Secrets behind the comics! (One of my lesser pet peeves: adventure heroes with the first name “Gulliver”.)

The 42 year old me absolutely gets that comic books are just a job, but the 7 year old in me just had no idea what went into these things and how they were made and who they were made by.

I wish they really were “just a job” for some people. It might inspire them to be more professional.

The thing I remember about Gullivar Jones (still not sure which issue of Creatures we had along with a Kull as they were coverless) was women with yellow skin as well as Gil Kane art... so it seems wasted in a B&W magazine.
Capt. A #255 and X-Men #143 I remember buying together at Christmas time. It was the best of times! I wonder if I knew the very next issues of each were going to be fill-ins? But then I found Ka-Zar #1 and liked that series quite a bit.

This is where training and practice make all the difference: knowing when to get out and how to do it the right way.

I did contemplate a page on which Xavier locates Kurt and guides Kitty to him, so she can retrieve him (and have a moment to remind us that she thinks he's creepy looking), but I felt that would slow down the pace of what I wanted to be a fairly frantic end to this issue.

Just realized the third anniversary of this project slipped by unnoticed 12 days ago. I started posting pages on June 16, 2018!
