I feel another Lee/Kirby vibe in how this particular story starts mid-issue, like the Galactus trilogy.

In that last panel, Sergeant "Smith" looks to be the work of a devout and devoted follower of Joe Kubert. The sheer raw black and white anger burns off the monitor... I feel as if I need SPF 20 just to read these pages. SMOLDERING!

It seems a shame that we'll not see a Byrne School of Art as Joe Kubert had. Certainly it's been done before, as evidenced by Mr. Kubert, but it seems that you have a lot to teach others, Mr. Byrne. Obviously it's not your kind of challenge - not that you couldn't rise to it, but if you don't like it, then it's a task, not a pleasure.

I love this page.

Being raised by Indigenous people fits so
well with him knowing how to hunt and live
off the land.

Could he have been suffering from some
sort of depression wandering alone for so
many years?

Was the line about creature comforts also
about female companionship?

JBs pencil work does remind me of Kubert's wonderful brush work, so much texture and energy at work here, and as soon as I see a soldier I instantly think of Kubert : )

Ever get the feeling you’re reading something that has been missing
from your collection forever and are only now able to afford it? Only
thing missing is the newsprint smell.
Dan, if you could get on that, please.

Strange to remember my original run on X-MEN was on newsprint, with hand separations and letterpress printing.

I haven't had this feeling of wanting and anticipation to see the next page since I was a kid!

And you have been doing it for 27 issues. I should be getting use to it.

As have others, I get a serious Kubert vibe from that last panel. Fantastic!

Parts of the Wolverine "flashback" panels remind me of Joe Kubert's TOR... which I LOVE!

This page makes me think I would enjoy a very extended length version of John Byrne's LOGAN, THE CANADIAN YEARS. I love Pollack/Redford's JEREMIAH JOHNSON and Berger/Penn/Hoffman's LITTLE BIG MAN and this feels like a tale that could top them both.
