I think that it goes without saying that if you have
someone as old as Wolverine and put him in WW II, you are
going to have him meet certain individuals. It's just the
way it is and any previous iterations of such a meeting do
not need to have been known for the idea to have formed in
one's head.

Especially if one develops a reputation for being a killing machine or paragon of a soldier. Guys like that end up being sent where the action is most intense.

I don't want to thread drift, so if someone can answer briefly - I had stopped reading X-Men by the time Claremont/Lee did a story with Cap & Logan in the war....but how is Natasha there?

I don't think it was actually explained and it came
completely out of the blue.

In a 1972 issue of DAREDEVIL, it was explained that Black Widow was a child during WWII, which at that point still would have been possible. Not so for a book published 20 years later, though. There was even a passing reference in the X-Men issue that that shouldn't be possible, but in Claremontian fashion, it was left at that.

If we're talking about the Black Widow, she was established from the beginning as having a connection to WW2, tho as an orphaned child. Don't know how Chris handled it.

(When I was working on THE CHAMPIONS I liked the idea that Natasha was in her fifties and still HOT. Of course, the passage of time made that less and less tenable. It's usually for the best NOT to tie characters to specific time periods, unless, like Captain America, they have an explanation of their continued youth and vigor.)

They ultimately went the Nick Fury route with Black Widow, giving her a variation of the Infinity Formula. I can't say that I have a problem with that, since her origins are so tied with the Cold War.
