And yes, "Weapon X" was reworked so that Wolverine is "Number 10," with Weapon I being... Captain America.
All I can say is, one person's offhanded "I was only joking" suggestion will inevitably be grabbed by someone who thinks "yeah, I can totally do this!"

Seems to happen a lot in X-Men books. The X-Babies, Storm's mohawk, a third Summers brother*, Magneto as a member of the team, and on and on. . .

Is that inadvertently your "fault"? Seems like Claremont got the inspiration for that from your putting him with the X-Men in DOFP. The first domino to fall towards that in the present day happened just 9 issues after that.
Perhaps a small mea culpa on my part, but I was operating on the original premise of DoFP--that it was a self-canceling event. Having happened, it would create a world in which it didn't happen.
Years later I read an interview with Chris and Weezi, in which he mentioned that his plans included Magneto becoming a teacher at the school (laughter),
Uh oh, I thought, Chris' sense of humor doesn't work like that!
I am really liking the narrative choices you have availed yourself of here in that these are the strongest images of Logan's recollection under duress, so the a-leads-to-b-leads-to-c pattern of storytelling isn't necessarily required in telling this tale. Fun stuff, lots of left turns when one is expecting a right :)
