Jason read my mind. Wolverine with a beard and the original whisker mask would be a cool look. A la the old Catman character.

It was interesting to draw this page/sequence, thinking back to when we were introduced to Wolverine, with no sense of who he was or--significantly--what he would become. As I've often pointed out, there were not a few writers in those days who "held back" (or so they would claim), excusing lackluster work on the grounds that they did not want to "give Marvel the next Spider-Man." None of us had any idea that that had already happened.

"Of course, it won't." No, indeed!
Always great to see JB's Hulk.

I suppose it's so easy to forget that many characters, like Wolverine, don't emerge fully formed but need quite a while to take shape. At this distant retrospective point, anybody can breeze through a collection of comics featuring Wolverine and "see" the character they already know even in his earliest appearances. But, of course, a character like Wolverine didn't truly come into his own until actual years passed by, and not just one or two. The "superstar" Wolverine was, what, maybe nearly a decade removed from his virtually ignored debut...?!

Interesting that Logan’s arms are no longer hairy when costumed.
Historical accuracy?

"It's also neat to see in that first panel JB riff on the original Trimpe/Abel splash page from HULK #181."
--
It could be completely coincidental, but I love that the pose is very close to the cover of WOLVERINE #17. | |

Not so much coincidence, as a limit on the number of ways to portray that particual pose!

I noticed in the sequence leading up to this page, where Logan met Mac and Heather, that the “unpredictable” brashness he’s normally portrayed with has not shown up. Wondering if that is intentional as well, as the modern day Elsewhen character has definitely been “act first, think later.”
