Looking at those pieces serves as a reminder that George, thru-out his career, employed a very "dead" line, hardly any variation from start to finish of the stroke.In my first meeting with Neal Adams, back in '71, he impressed upon me how important such variation was in giving weight and volume to figures, yet George was able to accomplish so much of that by having lines of different thicknesses NEXT to each other, without the line changing thickness along its length. It was one of the elements that made his work so distinctive. And made me wonder what my own work would have looked like had I not had that conversation with Neal.

Whenever I've been asked who my favorite comic book artist is, I've always said "Its a tie between John Byrne and George Perez". So you can imagine how giddy I was when ACTION COMICS #600 was announced.
I do have a Power Girl print signed by George, but sadly no original artwork.

Was recently flipping thru this...a great companion to CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, History of the DC Universe, based on the consequences of that epic miniseries, featuring beautiful illustrations by Pérez...

HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE is where CRISIS started. At dinner at a convention in Atlanta, Dick Giordano offered me the job—to take all the jumbled pieces of DC’s “history” and shuffle (and pound) them into some kind of cohesive unit, the last issue blowing it all up so the whole thing could start over with new first issues over the next several months. Frank Miller was also there, and he strongly advised me against taking on such a project. “The fans will crucify you!” I said there was no chance of me accepting this assignment, as I had nothing like the extensive knowledge of DC lore that would be necessary. So conversation moved on, and HISTORY evolved into CRISIS. George took on the art chores and, frankly, did a much better job than I would have.

It seems in the old days, there was much more creative input from the top stars in comics when it came to major events. I'm sure that isn't the case anymore

you're right (:To swing it back again - George Perez built such an incredible body of work, his legacy will remain ongoing. My first exposure to his work was when I asked my older brother - who was coming home from his Air Force basic training break - to bring me a comic book. He came back with Justice League #197. I was hooked! Man what a knock-out cover!

One of my favourite issues of the original JLA series ; by chance, I picked up the sole copy of #195 in a newsagents some distance away from home, and - drawn in by the brilliant artwork - kept revisiting the store over the following weeks to seek out both #196 and eventually #197 ...
Bearing in mind this was a time when such UK stores received just one copy of each issue (and occasionally none of some titles, meaning there was no guarantee of finding any specific number), I was fairly lucky that my persistence paid off.
They're still treasured today - probably about the best 60 pence I ever spent !
