Don't know why that seemed to go by so fast! GP's art will always stay relevant

I still marvel that a human being could make a pencil do that.

And I’d pay cash money to hear Byrne and Perez doing show tunes.

One of my favorite George memories remains singing show tunes with him as we shared a ride from a con hotel to the airport.

-----

The first time I went to Heroes Con (in 2000) I was walking near George's table and heard him and two gentlemen singing songs from 'Les Mis.' I naturally wandered over and joined in and now, 24 year later, I'm still good friends with those two guys.

Replace "pencil" with "pen" and I'm with you. Not knocking his pencilling prowess, of course, but I think that he was one of the best and most unique inkers in the business.

The first thing most fans will mention about his work is how much he coulod dram into one illustration.  And yeas, he was phenomenal at that.

But Perez was also one of those artists who could draw a story that you could follow without any dialog.

I remember seeing his art in 1975 for the first time and how much I loved it then, but he evolved as an artist and his work just got better and better over the years.  Most noticable was his improvement in drawing human anatomy and his ability to give each character a distict look.  You could tell Steve Rogers from Henry Pym from Clint Barton just from their facial features.

But most important was the joy he had doing it, and the wonderful interactions he had with fans.

I just watched a Canadian tv program with Mr. Perez on it. It was from 2006 and titled Collector Showdown. Two comic fans competed for a convention shopping spree prize. In one part they each had to draw a superhero and were judged by George Perez. The one who said he was a huge Perez fan actually lost, but in a way he won because George drew a very sharp Superman just for him... "To Don, Still A Winner"! The show winner managed to buy Hulk #181 and Giant-Size X-Men #1 in their thousand dollar spree (I couldn't tell the conditions). Oh yeah... I'd definitely have preferred to 'lose' for an original drawing! :^o

Just this past weekend I picked up THE ADVENTURES OF
SUPERMAN BY GEORGE PEREZ hardcover, collecting his work on
the Man of Steel going back to the '70s. I have most of
the individual issues, but I couldn't resist it.

Happy birthday to the amazing and wonderful George Pérez. He would’ve turned 70 years young today.
